Acknowledgments
We first met each other in the fall of 1996 in the teachers lounge at Harrington Elementary School in Denver. The rest, as they say, is history. Ours is a history full of friendship, adventure, and lots of learning. From amazing coaching experiences to those we would rather forget (but that taught us an awful lot). From having babies to raising teenagers. We have definitely been through a lot together over the past twenty years!
As educators, our shared history is built upon the wisdom of countless teachers, administrators, and coaches who we have worked with over the years. To each of them we are grateful for helping to shape us into the student-centered coaches that we are today.
Our more recent history is being made in schools and districts around the country and beyond. Many of those stories have been shared in this book. To every coach, principal, district administrator, and teacher with whom we work, we share our heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity to collaborate with you. Your successes, your trials and tribulations, and your thoughtful questions about this work have pushed our thinking and taught us more than you can possibly imagine.
Many of those questions led us to the idea of writing this book, which is truly built upon our own histories as coaches but also on the myriad of coaching conversations that we have been lucky enough to observe and that have been shared with us over the years. Collectively, all of these experiences have helped us coalesce our thinking into a series of coaching moves related to the core practices for student-centered coaching.
Specifically, this book would not have been possible without the help of a few key people: our team member Julie Wright for giving us such thoughtful, strengths-based feedback, our editor, Dan Alpert, for always having our backs and inspiring us to keep plugging away, and Dan Sweeney for keeping the rest of our work lives on track so we could focus on writing. Many thanks to each of you.
We are also incredibly thankful for everyone who helped make the video clips in this book a reality, and we are confident that they will provide a powerful tool to demonstrate the various coaching moves described in the book. Thank you to the incomparable Brooke ODrobinak and the teachers at Arrupe Jesuit High School in Denver; to Sara Tierney, Amy Tharp, Allison Beindorff, Cindy Graybeal, and the teachers at Field, Franklin, and Peabody Elementary Schools in Littleton, Colorado; to Joy Casey, Krista Dean, Val McElhinney, Rich Patterson, Cindy Ritter, and the teachers at Stuart, Prairie View, and Vikan Middle Schools in Brighton, Colorado; to Matt McKinney and Julie Slattery for their guidance throughout the video process; and to the crew at Hidden Woods Media for making it a smooth and comfortable experience.
Our shared history started on that fateful day in the teachers lounge and has led us to the writing of this book. Our sincere gratitude to each and every one of you who has been a part of the journey along with us.
