We are the myths. We are the Amazons, the Furies, the Witches. We have never not been here, this exact sliver of time, this precise place. There is something utterly familiar about us. We have been ourselves before.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Above all others, I must thank the many homeless women who willingly shared their stories with me. Their experiences helped me to formulate and define my own thoughts and encounters with the shadow. Barbara Karpf assisted in collecting the interviews and also provided an atmosphere of trust that allowed the women to speak freely. The staff at Community Connections were personally supportive while I took time to write the manuscript. The many patients I worked with in psychotherapy shared their own struggles with the shadow as they worked to become more whole.
Friends Helen Bergman, Laura Munder, and Charles Bethel read an earlier version of the manuscript and offered suggestions, as well as encouragement and support. Paul Dixon and Jean Rather offered support and guidance. Leona Bachrach, my friend and mentor, encouraged me to find my own voice and guided my early attempts at writing.

Sybil Tudor Trader, my typist and first editor, carefully and lovingly prepared the manuscript, and Laura Farah with care and enthusiasm performed the tedious task of assembling the manuscript for submission to publishers. Kim Wiar and John Drayton, of the University of Oklahoma Press, handled my work with respect and professional concern.
I cannot thank my family enough for their support, tolerance, and encouragement throughout this process. My sisters, Janet Ennis and Karen Harris, offered suggestions, but mostly sisterly love during the many months when I agonized over whether this manuscript would find the right publisher. Karen has graciously allowed me to use her painting
