About the Authors

Linda and Opie OBrien are full-time mixed media artists who enjoy pushing the - photo 4

Linda and Opie O'Brien are full-time mixed media artists who enjoy pushing the envelope through their imaginative use of metal, organic, recycled and found materials. Their work, which includes jewelry, books, assemblage, collage, dolls, masks and more, has been featured in numerous books, magazines, galleries, group and solo shows, museum gift shops and private collections.

Opie, an artist and musician, attended the School of Visual Arts and also studied at Pratt Institute in New York City. On the musical side of the coin, he played Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden with the Raspberries and Tommy James. His approach to art is disciplined, structured and meticulous.

Linda, on the other hand, is self-taught. Her philosophy is no rules, no restrictions. Her raw, free-spirited style and nontraditional techniques, define her as a true outsider artist. She has written feature articles for several publications including Belle Armoire and Art Doll Quarterly magazines.

New York transplants who enjoy living on Lake Erie in Northeast Ohio, with their cat Angelus and his cat Angel, Linda and Opie own Burnt Offerings Studio and enjoy teaching art workshops nationally and in Mexico.

To Bobby Hansson, who lit the fire.

Nobody does it better!

Thanks, Professor Bobo

Acknowledgments

We'd like to express thanks to the following people who helped bring this book to fruition: to North Light Books and Tricia Waddell for giving us this opportunity; to MaryJo McGraw for suggesting that it be on metal; and to Sharilyn Miller for opening so many doors. To Dina Rossi, our photographer and close friend for over 10 years, for always capturing our best side and never complaining, even when we needed something yesterday so far, this has been our best adventure! To Tim Grondin, the photographer; Karla Baker, the designer; and Jan Nickum, the photo stylist at North Light, for the cover, beauty shots and finishing touches. To our students and friends for inspiring us to always be our best creative selves. To our family for their never ending encouragement, belief and support (emphasis on support), and to Ruth for making Opie's funky hat.

To my Aunt Fran, who continues to watch over me, you are greatly missed and last but not least, to Tonia Davenport, our editor extraordinaire who kept us on track and exemplifies the phrase multi-tasking, you've been a wellspring of ingenious ideas, creative solutions and continuous smiles.

INTRODUCTION

Metal is an exciting material Whether its shiny and new or old and worn it - photo 5

Metal is an exciting material. Whether it's shiny and new or old and worn, it has a presence few can resist. Since 1994, we have been working with various types of metal and combining it with a myriad of mixed media. In fact, pairing metal with organic, recycled and found materials has become our passion.

Over the years weve learned from our mistakes and weve also made many - photo 6

Over the years we've learned from our mistakes and we've also made many wonderful discoveries that we're very excited to share with you. We call our process metalcrafting our way: a stress free, nontraditional approach to a time-honored discipline.

Think of this book as a journey, and as with any journey, there are many paths that can lead to the final destination. Our intention is to lead you down the path of least resistance; our hope is to simplify and demystify the process; and our desire is to assist you in finding your own creative voice as you soar to new artistic heights.
