Acknowledgements
The art of teaching and coaching hitting depends on using the knowledge of others and formulating a coaching philosophy based on this obtained knowledge. We would never have attempted writing this book without the help of several coaching clinics and many of the finest collegiate baseball programs in the country.
Special thanks go to the baseball coaching staffs at the University of Illinois, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Florida, Texas A & M University, Baylor University, and the University of Minnesota for sharing their knowledge with us and aiding us in our hitting philosophies.
We also appreciate the assistance of Andy Lopez of the University of Florida for writing the foreword to this book, Richard "Itch" Jones of the University of Illinois for all his input in shaping what we have written, Roger Coryell of Eastern Michigan University for his endorsement, and Rick Sandquist of Iowa Central Community College for his endorsement.
Thanks also to Matt Gast, Darryn Studdert, and Seth Kenny, who have volunteered their time to pose for various pictures and illustrations we have used throughout the course of this book; Paul Goldberg, strength and conditioning coach at Eastern Michigan University, for compiling the strength and conditioning workouts that are essential for hitters' success; Greg Ritchie of Kaelo Sports for the use of The Hitter's SeatTM; and David Hamburg and Michelle Summers of Coaches Choice for their guidance in making this book a reality.
We want to thank all the former coaches we have played for and worked under who have helped shape our coaching styles and philosophies throughout the years. This book was written as a result of all your hard work, dedication, and coaching values, which have been instilled in our coaching styles over time.

Foreward
The beauty of the game of baseball is that it has been able to withstand the test of time and has remained a virtual constant in American society through the years. Of course, minor trends have influenced the game and how it has been played, but baseball is still the same great game today that it was in the early part of this century. Contained within our great game are several aspects of athletic ability that make it unique. One such aspect is the art of hitting.
It has been stated, and will be repeated later in this book, that the task of hitting a baseball is one of the most difficult tasks to perform in the world of sports. Obviously, it is not easy to hit a ball traveling at a high rate of speed and with movement, much less hit it hard. Consequently, teaching this art and having success with ballplayers is a very demanding burden that coaches have to bear.
