Dedication
This book is dedicated to my two best friends, Paula and Gabe. Both were
sent to me by God's grace. Their love and the joy of working for athletes such
as Brad Abraham, Jean Paul Duhon, Larson Langston, Jeremy Pearcy, John
Perryman, Brent Saltzman, and Andrew Tennies have enabled me to
persevere when perseverance seemed impossible. To those boys I have not
namedmy love for you is not less; you will continue to play in the fields of my
memory. My life, my career, my mission, will continue to be a living tribute to
you commitment and loyalty. And finallyto Lisa who gave our family the
greatest gift of all. This one is for all of you.

Acknowledgments
Thankfully, I have had the fortune of studying the game with some of the best coaches in high school football. Many of the techniques described in this book were taught to me by Brownie Parmley, the highly respected 25-year veteran head coach of Bolton High School in Alexandria, Louisiana. I doubt that I would have obtained the ability to write a book on defensive football without experiencing his wisdom.
Further acknowledgment goes to the following people: Greg Miller of Kerrville for his time spent helping me in the finishing stage of this project; Steve Fry of Kerrville for his help in developing our game-plan format; and Stuart Cunyus of Kerrville's Mountain Sun for his photograph of the author.
I also offer thanks to the following brothers in coaching; to Phillip Mattingly of Port Arthur, Texas for the companionship and support all through my career; to Tommy Thomason of Sulphur, Louisiana for his demonstration of the ideal coaching spirit; to Bobby Dye of Red Level, Alabama for his friendship and never-ending belief; and to Lonnie Sewell of Cleveland, Texas for allowing me to experience the true essence of brotherhood and love.

Preface
Tenets of Teaching Defensive Football
To paraphrase the military strategist, Sun Tzu, with more sophistication comes more control. With sophistication comes also a visualization beyond common concepts and progress toward the path of perfection.
Too often the art of coaching is lost through individuals attempting to understate the depth to which the game is to be taught. A few football coaches fail to educate their athletes to the highest levels, choosing rather to adhere to the credo of coaching ignorance, the KISS formulaKeep It Simple Stupid. The word, the thought of the word, "stupid" has no place in the fields of education, from the field of football to the field of science. Should the high school mathematics educator limit his own knowledge to that of the twelfth grade advanced mathematics course? Does the senior English teacher limit her knowledge to what she believes only can be taught to the high school senior? Obviously, these are ridiculous questions. But why is it some coaches choose not to examine the dynamics of their sport as a master educator? It is the obligation of the coach to learn all that he or she can learn, then set forth to teach all that he or she can teach. It is the responsibility of the coach to be talented enough to express all the sophistication and "complexity" in a manner that all can learn to the limit of their capacity.
