Preface
In January of 1986, the Chicago Bears' defense, "the Monsters of the Midway," held the New England Patriots to a mere 10 points in Super Bow XX. The "46" defense utilized by the Bears held their opponent to six yards rushing. This 46-10 victory followed a record-setting season. A season which included an 18-1 record, back-to-back play-off shutouts, and 72 quarterback sacks, leading many to call this defense the greatest in NFL history. The architect of that defense is my father, Buddy Ryan. The ''46" was not designed in 1985 as some people believe. The "46" had its beginnings in the early 1980s as a way to put pressure on the passer. The following year, this system was redesigned into the system seen today. Buddy played this aggressive style every down and was just as successful stopping the run as he was the pass.
