In memory of my mom: the woman who gave me the strength to change my life. Love you always.
DEDICATION
Dearest Dustin: I am so thankful for everything you do for me day in and day out. Nothing goes unnoticed. You are my biggest supporter and I couldnt have done this project without your calming influence, skills in the kitchen and little pep talks. My rock, I love you to bits.
FOREWORD
Well, hello, folks. Robb Wolf here. Cindy Sexton, aka my pal to the North, has been a gal who has been interested and involved in this Paleo movement from the early days. Our connection goes way back to the early times of my nutrition seminars. We first met back in 2009, when I came up to Canada to do a gig in Toronto, but it wasnt until time upon time after that we actually became more acquainted. Through mutual friends like Julie and Charles Mayfield and Mathieu Lalonde (The Kraken), I have had the chance to hang with both Cindy and her husband Dustin during shin-digs and over several meals and dining experiences.
I can talk with Cindy for less than a few minutes and know right away that her passion for health and wellness is strong. When she gets going she just beams. What I adore about Cindys approach is this: It is simple, yet effective. Minimal, yet interesting. Nutrient focused, yet delicious. She doesnt overthink things and basically just goes with the flow. Her style is far from uptightmuch like mineand that is what I like. Eating well doesnt have to be so complicated.
This book is proof, case and point, that you do not need a lengthy list of ingredients to create recipes that are satisfying and wonderfully healthful. Cindy showcases her talents in this book with food ideas that will awaken your senses and leave you wondering why you were ever making it harder than it actually needed to be. With complementary pairings, Cindys dishes pack loads of flavor by making use of fresh, nutrient dense foods. She effortlessly turns them into super yummy grub. She makes use of good fats, quality animal sources, vegetables, some fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices. It really can be that easy.
When writing this book, Cindy partnered up with Mat Lalonde to make the recipes even more enlightening by highlighting certain foods and what they can bring to your plate in terms of their vitamin and mineral content. As an added bonus, Cindys writing style will make you feel like you are right there cooking alongside her in the kitchen. A unique spin on your everyday cookbook, this one will help you to determine some of the most nutrient dense foods possible and how to include them in your repertoire.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner, whenever oclock, this book is a breathtaking resource that gives you solutions to that age-old question of, What do you want to eat?

INTRODUCTION
THE WHO?
(NO, SILLY. I DONT MEAN THE ENGLISH ROCK BAND!)
INTRODUCING MOI
Hi. Are you Paleo? Its a question I get all the time. No actually, Im Cindy, nice to meet you! Paleo doesnt define me, but this will help. I am a woman, daughter, sister, aunt, wife, friend and teacher. More recently I am a nutrition enthusiast, exercise girl, home cook, blogger and now author!
But in reality, really, I am just a gala gal who has transformed her life completely with food and lifestyle changes. Plain and simple. I am just a gal who went from pretty much not cooking a darn thing to falling in love with chefing things up in the kitchen.
THE CATALYST
What a life-changing journey these past several years (decade+) have been! Wow! I cant believe it has been that long. What a ride.
In March 2003, my world was shaken by the sudden death of my dear mom. She was a nurturing and generous person, someone who always put others first. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with diabetes in her thirties and she became insulin dependent. As time went on she also developed other related conditions. At the age of just 56, she suffered a massive heart attack and left our world far too soon.
Living through this has been heartbreaking. After taking time to grieve and deal with this loss, I realized that I had to reevaluate my own life, including my food choices, level of physical activity and personal goals. These were all areas that I thought I was in control of, but in reality I was overweight and sedentary. I learned from my moms death that I had to turn my life around and take the reins of my own fate. When I was finally able to gain my ground, I was infused with strength I didnt even know I had! Sure, there have been ups and downs, but I found the motivation to get back on track. Not a day goes by that I dont think of my wonderful mom. I thank her for giving me the determination and the focus to embark on a new lifestyle.
By drastically changing my eating habits, exercise regime, sleep patterns and overall outlook on life, I have witnessed astonishing results. Not just in the way I look, but more importantly in my performance, mood and function. I am seventy(ish) pounds lighter, a heck of a lot happier and much, much stronger! I wake up with a channeled energy. I feel that I have a heightened sense of purpose and passion for what I believe in. I am thriving.
In February 2009, I reconnected with a close friend, Tyler Touchette. As my road towards greater health continued, the timing couldnt have been more perfect. Tyler, as well as countless others, has been and still is a major player in my (lifestyle) change, in bringing me to where I presently am. During our conversation at that time, he told me all about the paleo lifestyle and the strength and conditioning program/weightlifting he was involved with. Without hesitation, I decided to join the CrossFit Toronto gym in our neighborhood.
It has now been over 5 years since my husband and I experienced those deer caught in headlights days in the boot camp. Every day I become more and more in love with this way of life. My passion for cooking and eating really real food has grown remarkably. I never realized that making a few changes could make such a huge difference. This journey is far from over, and perhaps is only just beginning. I hope to continue to bloom and, in the meantime, to share some delicious recipes and tips along the way. Life is precious, live it! Heres to a healthier and fitter you. Go and love food (again)!
