Preface
A s the last words of the book were put to paper, an article came out stating that one in forty-five people is now identified with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). This study reports the highest incidence to date of ASD. For the past several years the number had been around one in sixty-eight; prior to that 1 in about 150. As the numbers grow more questions emerge. Why is ASD becoming more prevalent? Are there more cases, or are we just more aware of these individuals? This new study used parent questionnaires to gain the information. Prior research had used actual diagnostic information based on medical data. So for now the official number is still one in sixty-eight, but that may not stay official for long.
Every day it seems there are new studies, new information, and new theories about ASD. It is hard to keep up with the topic, and even harder to know what to believe. A condition so common is going to gain a lot of attention, with many differing opinions. The point of this book is to give you the most relevant information and to help you understand the past, present, and future regarding ASD. The hope is that after reading this book, you will walk away better educated about the topic and will better understand the conversation at large.
