The sixth edition of this textbook is dedicated first and foremost to our uroradiology colleagues, many of whom have served as mentors and sources of inspiration to each of us. Their scientific contributions are the basis of modern uroradiology upon which this book is based.
Among our colleagues in uroradiology, we especially miss Carl Sandler, who coauthored all previous editions. He was a good friend whom we all miss dearly.
We also dedicate this book to our families, who have lovingly tolerated our devotion to this endeavor.

The first edition of the Textbook of Uroradiology grew out of a discussion among Drs. Ronald McCallum, Carl Sandler, and Reed Dunnick at the annual meeting of the Society of Uroradiology in Scheveningen, The Netherlands, in May 1986. It was published by Williams & Wilkins in 1990. When Dr. McCallum retired, Drs. Dunnick and Sandler were joined by Drs. E. Stephen Amis and Jeffrey H. Newhouse, who had written their own textbook, Essentials of Uroradiology, published by Little, Brown and Company. These four authors completed the second, third, and fourth editions. Dr. Amis declined participation in the fifth edition due to his own busy schedule, and Drs. Richard Cohan and Stuart Silverman were recruited to each contribute a chapter in an area of their special expertise. After publication of the fifth edition, Dr. Sandler, a Professor of Radiology at the University of Texas, at Houston, passed away. Drs. Cohan and Katherine Maturen were recruited to participate in the creation of this, the sixth edition. The goal of the textbook remains to include material the reader ought to know, not everything there is to know.
With each revision, much new information is added. In order to keep the book a manageable size, older or outdated material is deleted. The excretory urogram, for decades the primary imaging modality of the urinary tract, is rarely, if ever performed and has been deleted. The chapter on anatomy has been removed, and pertinent information has been included in the chapter on congenital anomalies and other organ-specific chapters. The chapter on examination techniques has also been eliminated, reflecting the demise of many traditional uroradiologic examinations. The chapter on contrast material has been streamlined to focus on current usage.
