Important note: Medicine is an ever-changing science undergoing continual development. Research and clinical experience are continually expanding our knowledge, in particular our knowledge of proper treatment and drug therapy. Insofar as this book mentions any dosage or application, readers may rest assured that the authors, editors, and publishers have made every effort to ensure that such references are in accordance with the state of knowledge at the time of production of the book.
Nevertheless, this does not involve, imply, or express any guarantee or responsibility on the part of the publishers in respect to any dosage instructions and forms of applications stated in the book. Every user is requested to examine carefully the manufacturers leaflets accompanying each drug and to check, if necessary in consultation with a physician or specialist, whether the dosage schedules mentioned therein or the contraindications stated by the manufacturers differ from the statements made in the present book. Such examination is particularly important with drugs that are either rarely used or have been newly released on the market. Every dosage schedule or every form of application used is entirely at the users own risk and responsibility. The authors and publishers request every user to report to the publishers any discrepancies or inaccuracies noticed. If errors in this work are found after publication, errata will be posted at www.thieme.com on the product description page.

Dedicated to the past masters of radiology who have brought us so elegantly to this point, and to the future masters of radiology, who will take the field to unimaginable places.
Dedicated with love to Nicole, my wife, without whom this book would not be possible, and to Josh and Blake, my children, who provide my inspiration.

I am extremely grateful to the world-class organization at Thieme for its belief in the project and its subsequent invaluable guidance and skilled coordination of the manuscript. In particular, Kenn Schubach, Heidi Grauel, Torsten Scheihagen, and Bill Lamsback each deserve a very special thank you.
I am indebted to the numerous experts who have contributed so capably to this book. You are all extremely busy in your own daily practices, and your efforts in creating a text worthy of board preparation is tremendously appreciated. It is my hope that the final product justifies your dedication and commitment to the project.
A special acknowledgment to Drs. Twyla Bartel and Tracey Yarborough, who provided me critical assistance with the editing of this book. To both of you, your experience is apparent and your diligence is commendable.
Id like to single out one teacher from my own radiology residency, Dr. William Eyler. As an ABR examiner, he liked to say that he was a tough examiner, but an easy grader. That line has always stuck with me, and I agree that tough on the front end is a good strategy.
Finally, thanks to the talented residents and fellows who are at the very precipice of practice. To reach this point, you must have overcome formidable obstacles. Take solace in understanding that the hardest battles are reserved for the strongest soldiers, and trust yourselves as you enter your practice. You probably know more than you think.
All of us who have sat for the American Board of Radiology examination or the overseas equivalentsincluding the respective Royal Colleges of Radiology examinationsknow what a stressful time this is. For six months to a year, we are focused on passing the Radiology Boards, and the stress increases as the exam inexorably comes closer and closer. All we finally care about is passing this examination. Differential diagnoses are memorized again and again, particular attention is paid to difficult and rare diagnoses, and discussion is had as to what cases were shown previously. Consultant radiologists, going about their lawful duties in academic and other departments, are tormented with difficult questions about this or that possible diagnosis by anxious trainees, who then disagree with their staff and each other!
Dr. Weissman and his coauthors are to be congratulated on producing an excellent textbook to help radiology residents prepare for the American Board of Radiology and other similar radiology examinations. All of the subspecialty areas of radiology have their own chapters, and each is divided into four subsets. Essentials and Details sections present board-standard cases along with a thorough discussion on the differential diagnoses given. These cases involve one or more high-quality images. Multiple-choice questions in the subspecialty are also given and the answers discussed. Image-rich sections present multiple high-quality images of specific diagnoses, which the reader must identify. The diagnoses and imaging findings are then discussed. The final part of each chapter presents More Challenging cases with image-based and multiple-choice questions. The diagnoses and imaging findings are then discussed. Finally, key top tips and a suggested reading list are included.
