Every day there are billions of people in the world who eat for practically nothing. Unfortunately, in most cases, its because they have no choice. But there are also an increasing number of people who are choosing not to spend money unnecessarily on food and are rediscovering very cheap recipes which can often be healthy and nutritious.
More than 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 a day. Thats nearly half of the entire worlds population. Of those 3 billion people, more than 1.3 billion live on less than $1.25. And that money has to cover all their costs, not just food.
And many people who eat extremely cheap food have some of the longest life expectancies in the world.
On the other hand, in the USA two out of every three men are considered to be overweight or obese, and the statistics for women are even higher. These are the highest percentages in the world. Carrying excess weight gives rise to all sorts of health problems including certin cancers, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, strokes, etc etc and of course the health care costs associated with being out of shape are enormous, both to the Governement as well as to the individual.
For sure, life expectancy is not only a function of what you eat but your total lifestyle including physical activity, avoidance of bad habits such as smoking and excessive drinking, and also the quality and affordability of the health care system in your country. But why waste money making yourself sick, impairing your quality of life and shortening your lifespan just by eating the wrong and often over-priced foods.
In almost any meal you can think of, the most expensive thing on the plate is likely to be the meat, fish or poultry. And yet vegetarians and vegans have shown us time and again that its possible to eat healthily without consuming animal products.
This book isnt about becoming a vegetarian or vegan but theres a lot to be learnt from people who live in poverty and from those who choose to eat only a small amount of food derived from animals. And youll save a lot of money every month in the process.
Pantry staples
Obviously, to make a wide variety of dishes cheaply, you need to have a reasonably stocked pantry of staples so you dont need to keep running to the supermarket to buy extra ingredients. Back in the old days people understood this and always had things on hand or made do without. The whole idea is to keep the things you need frequently and that dont go off quickly so theyre always there waiting to be used and to save you tons of money.
Please see our article on stocking the pantry:
Simple Food Stocking the pantry
which gives you a great basic list of things to keep on hand and then you just adapt it to your needs as you go along.
And the great thing is that theres no exact recipe for any of these dishes. You really just throw in whatever you have.
All the recipes are designed for TWO people so just factor the ingredients up or down to suit your requirements. Weve included 21 great recipes from around the world that will really get you cooking and saving you money on every meal.
Good luck and enjoy!

How much does a pizza cost at your local pizza joint? $15? $20? Yet the cost of making a pizza is practically zero and of course you can just throw on anything that you have in your fridge and freezer providing you have cheese of some description that you can grate up.
Many supermarkets sell frozen plain pizza bases which can be quite cheap and will save you time and mess in the kitchen, but if you prefer to make your own base its actually much simpler than you think. And no, you dont need to toss it in the air and do all sorts of theatricals!
So heres a simple recipe for an all-purpose pizza base. With a bit of practice, youll soon get the hang of it and then you can make several pizza bases at a time and freeze them uncooked for more simple meals another time. The recipe below will probably make two medium-size pizza bases depending on how thick you like them.
Ingredients:
Flour 00-type is best
Instant dry yeast in a packet
Olive oil
Warm but not boiling water (about one part water to two and a half parts flour)
Method:
- Tip half a kilo (1lb) of flour into your food processor together with two teaspoons of instant dry yeast and a table spoon of olive oil, and pulse for 10 seconds or so until well mixed.
- With the food processor working, add warm water very slowly through the spout over a period of 30 seconds or more until the dough forms into a large ball. If its too sticky, add more flour and continue processing.
- On a floured surface, knead the dough ball for a minute or two and put in an over-sized bowl, covered with a clean kitchen cloth and leave to stand for an hour or so. It will expand to about double the size.
- After an hour or so, work the dough a bit more and divide into 2 or 3 smaller balls. Wrap each one in plastic wrap and leave for another 30 minutes or more.
- Roll out the dough balls on a floured surface to get the size, shape and thickness you want. Turn over the edges if you wish to form a crust.
- Place on oiled aluminium foil, add your toppings and pop in a pre-heated oven at 220 degrees centigrade for 10-20 minutes until cooked.
Tips:
Toppings can include chopped peppers, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, olives, bacon, salami or other cold meats, left-over chicken, barbeque sauce etc etc. You can also add dried thyme or rosemary if you wish.
Theres absolutely nothing wrong with using packet pasta from your supermarket. Its cheap and it keeps for ages in the pantry. And there are all sorts of shapes and colours to choose from. All you need to do is rustle up a tasty sauce which takes about 20 minutes and you have a meal on the table for practically nothing.
Marinara is the most basic of Italian pasta sauces and its a great one to get started with.
Ingredients:
400 gram can of tomatoes
2 tablespoons of tomato paste
2 peeled cloves of garlic or garlic powder
Dried oregano or thyme to taste
Frozen chopped onion or half a white onion
Black pepper and salt to taste
Packet pasta of your choice
Grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
Method:
- Put everything except the pasta and Parmesan cheese in your food processor and blend until smooth.
