WINSTON H., chief of staff, health care
School taught me how to code and debug but not how to turn managers and coworkers into allies. Thanks to The Unspoken Rules, I went from not having anyone to lean on to building lifelong friends and mentors.
PRIYA R., software engineer, finance
I felt lost while remote onboarding to my first full-time job, which had no HR and coworkers who were too busy to train me. The Unspoken Rules taught me how to be proactive, ask the right questions, and convince my manager that I am ready for more important responsibilities.
ANDR M., political staffer, government
After reading The Unspoken Rules, I realized why I didnt get a return offer in my previous internship. Now, two months into a new job, my boss has even told me that she has never seen this level of ownership and professionalism from a recent grad before!
HONG L., marketing analyst, nonprofit
Switching careers is stressful, especially when all of your colleagues have years of experience. The Unspoken Rules gave me a framework for earning others trust from day one. I went from feeling like an impostor to being recognized as a quick learner and effective teammate.
EMMANUEL C., human resources, biotechnology
In my first job, I was so concerned about making the perfect comment that I was always quiet in meetings with senior partners. The Unspoken Rules helped me find the confidence to speak up, so Im now an active contributor in investment committee meetings.

GETTING ALONG WITH EVERYONE - SECRETS TO
GETTING AHEAD
It was 2:30 a.m. and I was still in the office, frantically trying to fix a broken Excel spreadsheet that was to be presented to a client in six hours. Was this what the job posting had meant by dynamic and fast-paced environment?
Then, ding! A notification popped up on my laptop. My manager was asking me to hurry up.
Ding! Another message.
Ding!
I sent the updated spreadsheet to my manager. Ten minutes later, he still hadnt replied.
Gorick, said a voice behind me. I sprang off my chair and turned around. It was my manager. Lets work through this together, he said. We sat side by side for another two hours. He took over my laptop, and I looked over his shoulder, desperately trying to keep my eyelids from shutting.
My manager pointed to a cell. Why are we dividing these numbers?
I leaned over and squinted. Im not sure.
He sighed. That night felt like surgery without anesthesia. As my head throbbed, I wondered: How did I end up in this situation?
The answer came in a performance evaluation ten months into my job: Gorick needs to fully own his work, including going through the painstaking preparation of taking over someones Excel project. When I read my review, I was puzzled. Own his work? Sure, my manager told me to own the Excel analysis, but I thought that meant I was responsible for keeping the master (the main and most up-to-date) file. What did it mean to own my work? My manager had said I did a good job in the end.
