Preface
One of the hottest topics of the 1980s among family researchers has been the interaction between work and family life. Propelled by the dramatic changes created by women's entry into the work world. social scientists have delved into the complex knot entangling work and family lives, turning away from their earlier preoccupation with work and family as separate entities. As women, and more particularly, married women with children, move out of the home into the workplace. major dislocations in our social conceptions of gender. parenthood. and work identity have occurred. Work life and family life no longer remain separate, inviolate, and gender-specific, neatly divisible into distinct social realms, as researchers in earlier decades perceived them. Instead. undeniable connections exist between work and family life, connections often revealing confusion, competition, and exhaustion for the individuals involved.
Family researchers, busily identifying sources of work-family tension, locate them variously in intrafamily dynamics (such as unequal sharing of household responsibilities), in workplace structures (such as rigid time schedules) and in the larger socioeconomic structure (such as capitalism as a patriarchal system). Numerous studies highlight time conflicts, child care cost and availability, and exhausting multiple role demands as particularly daunting to families seeking to place work and family life in a more harmonious balance. The proliferation of work-family research over the past decade underscores the difficulty of balancing these two domains as it reveals ever more obstacles exacting a heavy personal and family cost.
Page viii
The ease with which researchers identify impediments to balancing reflects both a social reality and a predisposition to consider work as the more powerful social influence. How work influences family life represents a second wave of social science research, following the dominant first wave which emphasized the separateness of these spheres. Accordingly, most research of recent years concentrated on how dominant work demands intruded on family life. Investigators studied work spillover into family life, looking at how work schedules, job demands, and the emotional effects of working forced families to bend and accommodate. While theoretically positing that effects could be mutual, such research heavily emphasized the unidirectionality of the work realm's influence on family life.
