Dedication and Gratitude
I wrote this book for you because I want you to believe that finding your health through nutrition is delightful and a worthwhile pursuit. Trust that healing your relationship with food is not only possible but also delicious. Even if we have not met, I think fondly of you because I know the beautiful journey you have in store and the contribution you will make once you share this knowledge with your circle!
I also dedicate this book to my family because they made it possible to bring you this volume in half the time and with twice the enjoyment than if Id had to create it on my own.
My hubby, Alan Smith, makes every recipe test, every photograph and every edit better than I ever thought it could be. You hold the whole project in your capable arms so I can play and create inside the secure container you willingly carry. Words cant describe how grateful I am that you walk with me through life. I love you to the moon and back!
My sister, Lynn Daniluk, not only showed me how to create a recipe in the early days, but also handles every email while I am working to meet book deadlines. Thank you so much for all your wisdom and intuition. I look forward to getting stronger and more adventurous together as the years flow by.
My mom, Elaine Daniluk, and father, Neil Daniluk, decided to change the course of my life by eliminating sugar and artificial foods from our diet when I was only seven years old. Thank you. I owe you my life, my joy and my ability to write clearly.
My brother and yoga instructor, Yogi Shambu (Steven Daniluk), calls me every single morning to set my day off on the right foot. He can calm anxiety and clarify the mind in a way that feels like the world is a kind and optimistic place, and I am forever grateful for his guidance.
My nephews and nieces give me great joy and purpose. I love to cook for them and treat them to many exotic foods. I am grateful that they are brutally honest when something tastes funny because it pushes me to create kid-approved recipes and hide some brain-building nutrition so I can pay forward the gifts my parents gave me all those years ago. Big love goes out to Christian, Kaydn, Taevan, Eli, Aiden, Finn, Colton, Jade, Audrey, Avery, Ashlyn and Amelie.

Introduction
I want to begin by thanking you for picking up this book. If you are reading this, my guess is that you already know that sugar is running the show. What may surprise you is that sugar is now in more than 74 percent of packaged products on the grocery shelf! I hope that the information provided in this book will be the inspiration you need to give up the white stuff. You may have wanted to for a while but didnt know how to make that leap. This book is designed to close the gap between your knowledge about sugars impact on your health and your daily actions of actually going sugar-free.
I wrote this book to encourage you to take back your taste buds and feel the liberation of positive moods and mental clarity that will put you back in the drivers seat of your life. This is your opportunity to stop allowing sugar to rule you and instead choose that the next bite you eat will be authentic, honest and, most importantly, delicious. This book is for everyone. Even if you dont think you have a problem with sugar, listen to your body. Your symptoms or conditions might tell you otherwise. Whether you have a predisposition to anxiety or depression, dementia or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mood imbalances or low energy, these all can result from brain inflammation that is linked to high blood sugar levels. By decreasing and ultimately removing sugar from your diet, you will reduce inflammation in your entire body and create an improvement in overall health. It can be one of the first steps in relieving the struggle and pain of arthritis, bursitis, colitis, heart disease, weight gain, memory loss, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and a myriad of other inflammatory conditions.
Why did I decide to write this book about breaking up with sugar? I have had a very long journey to living sugar-free that started when I was a little girl. I was seven years old when my mother realized that I was intolerant to cane sugar. My body could not efficiently break down sucrose, the type of sugar found in good old white table sugar. It was exacerbating my insomnia and ADHD and increasing the symptoms of my auditory learning disability. It was causing neuroinflammation. I have memories of feeling trapped in my little anxious body. I would get so hyperactive that I drove my older sister, Lynn, crazy. I would cry at my birthday parties after eating the sugary cake. I would have a collosal meltdown after Halloween, Christmas and Easter because my brain couldnt think clearly after the sugar binges. In love and desperation, my parents decided to conduct an experiment in which they would eliminate refined sugar, artificial dyes and preservatives from my diet and choose to sweeten my food with honey or dates. My sleep improved in a few days, and my grades skyrocketed from Ds to As within the month. My moods and confidence improved, and I could smile again.
