The authors and publisher have made every effort to ensure that the patient care recommended herein, including choice of drugs and drug dosages, is in accord with the accepted standards and practice at the time of publication. However, since research and regulation constantly change clinical standards, the reader is urged to check the product information sheet included in the package of each drug, which includes recommended doses, warnings, and contraindications. This is particularly important with new or infrequently used drugs. Any treatment regimen, particularly one involving medication, involves inherent risk that must be weighed on a case by case basis against the benefits anticipated. The reader is cautioned that the purpose of this book is to inform and enlighten; the information contained herein is not intended as, and should not be employed as, a substitute for individual diagnosis and treatment. Preface
Psoriasis is a visible, disfiguring, skin disease that affects one in 50 men and women of all ages. It occurs worldwide and lasts a lifetime. The most frequently affected areas are the scalp, knees, and elbows, but psoriasis may involve all parts of the body, including the nails. As of today, we do not know the cause, and for this reason, we cannot cure it. Psoriasis does not take lives, but it can be ruinous to the lives of some patients.
Patients ask, What is psoriasis? What causes it? Will my children inherit it? How is psoriasis treated in children or the elderly? What can be done to be rid of these itchy, reddish, scaly patches! This book will answer these questions.
Psoriasis has been known to exist from biblical times, and in fact, it may have been misdiagnosed as leprosy. It was only one hundred years ago that the first accurate clinical description of psoriasis was published. Today, psoriasis is still a chronic skin problem, but many therapeutic creams, lotions, and ointments are available as well as combinations of ultraviolet radiation and certain drugs that provide psoriasis patients with symptomatic relief.
