Foreword
I am both honored and delighted to be writing the Foreword for this book. The honor stems from being associated with two authors who I hold in greatest esteem and who are superbly well equipped to write this book. They have a wealth of experience and knowledge of the subject matter and an enviable reputation as teachers of the highest order. My delight comes from the knowledge that this book is timely, much needed, and will be widely appreciated as a valuable resource to a readership from a wide variety of backgrounds.
In the time I have been studying and practicing medicine, I have seen dramatic changes in our understanding and management of rheumatic diseases. Nevertheless, as a radiologist, I find it gratifying that imaging continues to play a fundamental role in the diagnosis and management of these conditions. The continued relevance of imaging to this field is in no small part explained by the enormous strides that we have seen in the imaging techniques available for the assessment of joint-based disease. Furthermore, the application of imaging in rheumatologic research has played a significant role in advancing our understanding of joint diseases, and a review of contemporary publications in the rheumatologic and radiologic literature shows that this continues to be the case. It therefore makes sense that Drs. Greenspan and Gershwin have chosen to focus this text on imaging. While recognizing the important place advanced imaging techniques now have in the evaluation of rheumatologic disease, stressing their role where relevant, the authors have put a firm emphasis on conventional radiographic findings, which remain at the heart of the diagnostic workup. This results in a book which fulfills its purpose of being a clinically relevant text, highlighting how imaging is used in practice.
The great strength of this book comes from the breadth of knowledge brought by the authors combining their wealth of experience as radiologist and rheumatologist. The first section of the book discusses the clinical, pathologic, and imaging assessment of arthritides and arthropathies, and the very first chapter provides a wonderful overview of the clinical and laboratory evaluation of these diseases. This is particularly valuable for those readers who like myself have come to the book as radiologists, with rusty clinical skills and a hazy recollection of laboratory tests, allowing us to appreciate how imaging fits into the diagnostic process. On the other hand, the overview of imaging techniques provided by will prove particularly helpful to those readers with a nonradiologic background, although many radiologists will like me benefit from the review of radiographic projections and advanced imaging techniques provided. A chapter highlighting the way in which clinical, laboratory, and imaging findings come together in making a diagnosis and a chapter discussing the treatment of arthritides and arthropathies complete this section.
