Preface
When I was five years old, my father, a large-animal veterinarian, took me out on farm calls with him. We lived about 15 minutes from the mecca of Amish AmericansLancaster County, Pennsylvaniaand most of my dads clients were Amish.
The Amish are a group of traditionalist Christian fellowships with Swiss German Anabaptist origins, known for simple living, plain dress, and a strong aversion to modern technology. Theyre often represented in movies dressed like pilgrims and riding in horse-drawn buggies. Pop culture has long been fascinated with the Amishtake the 1985 movie Witness, which starred postHan Solo Harrison Ford and preTop Gun Kelly McGillis in a bonnet. More recently, Breaking Amish, a reality TV series, followed four young Amish adults and one Mennonite through their adventures in New York City.
From ages 5 to 10, I spent a lot of time on those Amish farms, making the short trek there in my dads red pickup truckthe one with the little hatch attached to the back cab window that held all his medical toolsto treat dairy cows for milk fever. On a typical call, particularly in the summer, my dad would care for anywhere from 10 to 20 cows. That took several hours, which meant I was stuck there. So what did I do?
