Hide: a childs view of the Holocaust: summary, description and annotation

In 1942 German Nazis and Polish collaborators drove nine-year-old Naomi Rosenberg and her family from the town of Goray, Poland, and into hiding. For nearly two years they were forced to take refuge in a crawl space beneath a barn. In this tense and moving memoir, the author tells of her terror and confusion as a child literally buried alive. Her family owed their survival to the reluctant and constantly wavering support of the barn owners, gentiles torn between compassion for Naomis family and fear of a Nazi death sentence if the family was discovered.

Foreword
As the survivors of the Holocaust age, it has become more and more critical that their stories be recorded for the sake of generations to come. That is what has energized the Spielberg Foundation to conduct its thousands of interviews. That and other reasons have led many individuals to tell their stories.
Any telling has value, deepening the record and belying those in future generations who would deny the horror. And, in some way, if the telling serves the need of the teller, then all to the good.
It is, however, particularly valuable when the one telling the story has a true talent for writing. That is the case with Naomi Samson, the author of Hide. I was introduced to Naomi and her husband, Harry, through a friend. Naomi, aware of my association with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), immediately told me that she was a Hidden Child and had attended the ADL's historic Hidden Child Conference in 1991. Naomi began telling me something about her experiences, and I was moved and impressed by her articulation and sincerity. She soon brought me a manuscript she had written about her life as a Hidden Child. Several days later, I picked it up and did not put it down until I was finished reading it.
It is a powerful document, not only because it is an incredible tale of survival but because Naomi has the unusual skill of letting events speak for themselves. As a result, readers feel as if they are living the events with the family rather than reacting to commentary on the events.
One element that comes through dramatically in Hide is the dichotomy between the clear lines ofgood and evil on the one hand and the complexity of human behavior on the other. Naomi's direct way of presenting her material allows readers to see very

clearly the evil of those perpetuating the Holocaust as well as the innocence of the victims. At the same time, complexity abounds. Those who protected the family are the most diverse people from true heroes to those who are calculating and looking out for their self-interest even while doing good to those who are so calculating that betrayal is inevitable.
And there is, as well, the complexity of the victims. Naomi's family is a wonderful, protective unit, but they are real people who feel anger and guilt as well as love and care.
Hide is a memoir to remember, and I am honored to have been involved in its publication.
