Introduction

Camping is supposed to be all about spending time with your family in the great outdoors. What camping is not supposed to be about is worrying about what you are going to be cooking or how big of a mess you are going to need to be cleaning up after meals are done. When you go camping you want to spend time with your family playing outside, whether it is hiking or boating. You want to come back to your campsite feeling like you have enjoyed the day.

Sadly, most of us come back to our campsites dragging our feet. We know that planning, cooking, and cleaning comes next. And frankly, all too often we had so much fun playing that it is the last thing we want to be doing, but we know it has to be done. Luckily, there is something that can be done to make camping fun and exciting once again.

Gone are the days where you need to spend hours planning your camping menu. No more having to load up your entire kitchen just to make it through a week in the outdoors. To make camping enjoyable again all you need is a cast iron pan and a few rolls of heavy duty tin foil, as well as some great recipes to help get you started.

Chapter One: Cast Iron and Tin Foil Cooking

In this chapter, you will learn:

  • Why you need cast iron
  • Benefits to tin foil cooking
Cooking with Cast Iron

The next time you are getting ready to head out on a campout, take a few seconds to pack up your cast iron skillet. If you dont have one, make sure you go out and buy one just to bring it along. Cast iron skillets are what we call an essential kitchen item because of how versatile they are, bet you never thought to bring one camping though.

When you are out camping you have the option of cooking over a little tiny camp stove or you can cook over the open campfire. Both of those severely limit the items that you can prepare, if you dont have a cast iron skillet handy. Camp stoves are small, so using a large skillet is nearly impossible because the pan just doesnt heat up enough. Campfires are extremely intense in terms of heat, so most people use roasting sticks to cook over it. Cast iron skillets can withstand the extreme temperatures put out by the fire without damaging the pan, plus they evenly distribute heat so they can be used on smaller burners.

Another bonus to cooking with cast iron is it can be used as a grill. What this means for you while camping is you dont have to worry about lugging your BBQ with you, even if it is just a small charcoal one. The cast iron skillet and the campfire will work perfectly together, whether you want to grill up a burger or cook the perfect steak. And, the reason you can use it as a grill is because the skillet can get upwards of 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

A cast iron skillet is one of the most versatile cooking utensils you will run across. You can literally cook just about everything in it from biscuits and gravy, frying donuts, to brownies; they can all be made inside this one pan. Cast iron skillets are easy to clean, are already non-stick as long as they have been seasoned right, and they are practically indestructible. Cast iron skillets can be dropped without damage, they wont discolor from heat, and they cannot be scratched, making them the perfect pan to take with you in the outdoors.

Can I Really use Tin Foil?

Cooking with cast iron is great during campouts, but if you want even less of a mess you need to try something called tin foil cooking. One of the best things about tin foil cooking is just how versatile it is. Tin foil cooking can be done with just about any ingredient and can be done just about anywhere. However, the best part is with tin foil cooking you have no dishes to wash. Everything is cooked inside the tin foil, plus food can be eaten out of the tin foil or dumped onto a paper plate.

One of the great things about tin foil cooking is that you can actually prepare everything ahead of time. You dont have to throw everything together right before you cook it. So, for your next camp out you can make your tin foil meals before you head out, you can even throw them in the freezer so they can keep longer.

Tin foil cooking is great for campouts, but you do have to be careful with them. With tin foil meals you are simply throwing everything into one packet to cook. This can present a problem in terms of some items cooking faster than others, so with tin foil cooking timing is everything. To ensure everything is done at roughly the same time you need to think about the ingredients you are using and how thin or thick they are sliced. For example, a carrot cut the same thickness as a cube of beef is going to take longer to cook. To ensure the carrot cooks as quickly as the beef you are going to want to slice it rather thin. And, always use the same packet when checking on your foods progress. Once you have cooked tin foil dinners a few times you will have an easier time getting the timing just right.
