What a great day it is when one can collaborate with wonderful peers to create a piece of work they truly believe is missing in the literature! From my first conversations with Danton Ford that generated the idea and identified the gap and the need that this book could start to fulfill, to the reading of the first drafts that taught me so much about facets of English when applied to diplomacy, I have enjoyed every minute of this process. My first thanks, therefore, could go to no other than the academics, scholars, and practitioners who made this project come to fruition. Their knowledge, enthusiasm, patience, and willingness to entertain my suggestions were the elements that made this volume possible. Special thanks go to Francisco Gomes de Matos, whose vision and wisdom first inspired me to pursue Peace Linguistics and issues of global understanding.

Danton Ford has worked in ESL teaching and training in the Republic of Korea since 1996. He is currently a full-time lecturer and curriculum developer at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he has been training Korean diplomats in English communication skills since 2005. The areas of his training include Negotiation, Debate, Presentation, Diplomatic Communication and Writing. In addition to his training at KNDA, he has lectured extensively on English negotiation and communication skills for various government organizations such as the Korean Intellectual Property Office, Korea Gas Corporation and Ministry of Environment. Danton completed his BA in English/Education from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and MA in North Korean Studies from Kyungnam University in Seoul. He also received training in negotiation from the Harvard Negotiation Institute and completed the Executive Education program in negotiation from the University of Notre Dames Mendoza College of Business. Danton has co-authored a book on presentation skills and two English speaking books for ESL learners.

Patricia Friedrich (editor) is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Composition/Linguistics at Arizona State University in the United States, where she teaches courses on Writing, Sociolinguistics, the History of English, and topics in general Linguistics. Her main research interests include World Englishes, social and political aspects of the spread of English, cross-cultural communication, and Peace Linguistics. She is the author/editor of two books by Bloomsbury ( Language, Negotiation and Peace and Teaching Academic Writing ) and the editor of Toward a Nonkilling Linguistics (Center for Global Nonkilling). She was also an area editor for Wileys The Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics . Two new books on aspects of linguistic diversity were recently published: Palgrave-Macmillans The Literary and Linguistic Construction of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Routledges The Sociolinguistics of Digital Englishes (with Eduardo H. Diniz de Figueiredo). Dr Friedrich has contributed about 30 journal articles and book chapters to such publications as World Englishes and Harvard Business Review . She is a published author of fiction as well.

Francisco Gomes de Matos is Professor Emeritus at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil. A peace linguist and a TESOLer, he has degrees in Law (UFPE), Linguistics (University of Michigan) and Applied Linguistics (Catholic University of So Paulo). He has taught in Canada, Mexico and the US. Dr Gomes de Matos is co-founder and president of the Board of ABA Associao Brasil Amrica in Recife and co-founder of the World Dignity University initiative. Among his publications are Dignity: A Multidimensional View (2013, DignityPress), Nurturing Nonkilling: A Poetic Plantation (2009, Center for Global Nonkilling), Criatividade no Ensino de Ingls: A Resource Book (2004, Editora DISAL, So Paulo), Pedagogia da Positividade (1996, Editora da UFPE, Recife). He co-authored, with Patricia Friedrich, the chapter Toward a Nonkilling Linguistics in the volume Nonkilling Linguistics: Practical Applications . He has pioneered a chapter on Applying the Pedagogy of Positiveness to Diplomatic Communication in the book Language and Diplomacy (2000). He is also the author of a pioneering Plea for a Universal Declaration of Language Rights (1984) and of a Plea for Communicative Peace (1993).
