Book Description
What happens when one member of the family decides that the family secret isnt worth keeping?
Based on a true story, this riveting tale exposes the shared secrets that many families would rather take to the grave.
Chantels world was turned upside-down when she discovered the abuse of her brother Roy at the hands of her mothers boyfriend, J.R. Outrage and panic left Chantels head spinning. How could someone do something so disgusting and violating?
Even after numerous attempts to end the abuse, Chantel was silenced by her family. It was clear to Chantel that they were not being protected by those who are supposed to love them the most.
The questions lingers with Chantel for years to come: Why is J.R.s protection continuously held above the love and care of innocent children?
Chantel was expecting that this tortuous situation was in the past. She had hopes that Roy could heal despite of the abusive presence still in their lives. Healing, however, isnt in the cards yet for this family as all three of Roys children
Chantels nieces and nephewhave experienced the same horrors as their father before them. Chantel will not be silent and allow the family to keep J.R.s sordid secrets.
Turning A Blind Eye introduces a heroine whose fierce ambition has her stop at nothing to expose her familys secret. It is Chantels mission to reveal the truth and break the generational curse.

Note to the Reader
Dear Reader ,
If you have ever experienced sexual abuse or assault in your childhood, this letter is meant for you. I am so sorry this has happened in your life. You were a child. You were young, innocent, and pure. It doesnt matter what clothes you wore, how you walked, thought, spoke, or what you did. You didnt do anything to deserve it. Trust me, it is not your fault. Please do not blame yourself for anything that happened to you in the past. Please do not spend hours questioning the reason it happened to you. Please do not try to make sense of it all because, it doesnt make sense.
I will not ask you to move on; I wont expect that of you. I wont ask you to forget it ever occurred and fake it til you make it. All I want you to do is to take it one day at a time. Sit with yourself. Listen to your feelings. Acknowledge your pain. Let yourself feel the pain. Let yourself cry. Let your heart express itself. Do whatever it is that you think you need to do to make yourself feel better.
It may take some time, but you will rise through this. I assure you, can still heal. You will still find happiness, and you will find the courage to lead your best life. You can find inspiration to pursue your dreams. You will get your confidence back and be able to do everything you wanted to do.
How do I know this? It is because I believe in the power of goodness. I believe in the power of love and time, and I believe that they can both heal you. Hold on tight to this rope of life and there will be light. Believe that you can get through it because you can, not because you have to. You are amazing. You are strong. You are powerful. You can achieve more than you know once you put your mind to it.
Since this book deals heavily with the theme of child abuse and sexual assault, I urge you to be aware of your boundaries and limitations. If this book seems like too much for you, dont force yourself to read it. Take care. Speak to a professional. Seek support. My book is only here to show you the light after such a darkening storm, but in order to see said light, we need to experience the storm. If this makes you uncomfortable, I encourage you to set this book aside. Come back to it when you are ready.
Keep going. I believe in you.
Sincerely,
Prologue

y name is Chantel, and sometimes things arent always what they seem.
I was born at Sky View Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 14th, 1980. Its a beautiful place where the weather is always warm, but the winter averages out to around 24F. Its quite scenic here.
Ive lived in Kansas City all my life. Weve got some of the best barbecue, and jazz is a well-known genre heard on our streets. I dont mind it. It helps block out all the noise.
Where we live, isnt the nicest neighborhood filled with the nicest people. Our central community practically swarms with two things: drugs and guns. Usually, its at the fault of teenagers. A lot of people dont consider it a big deal, particularly because, during the day, its peaceful and normal.
For every family but ours, that is.
Truthfully, I dont know what normal looks like. I always figured it would have the standard house, enough for everybody in the householdmom, dad, sister, brother. It would have a guest bedroom and all the rooms necessary to live comfortablya living room, dining room, kitchen. There would be a ground level, top level, and bottom levelwhatever. I picture normal including a backyard and an elegant front yard, regular nine-to-five day jobs, maybe a dog, too but that isnt at all how it is.
Not for my family at least.
No, my family consists of Mom; my little sister Michelle, whos six years younger than me; and our brother, Roy, two years fresher into life than Michelle. Weve all got different dads and none of them are around today except for Michelles who occasionally takes us all out to have fun. He never leaves me or Roy out whenever he picks up Michelle on the weekends, which is better than anything my dad has ever done. I wont complain even though I wish my dad was here to do the same with me. Im glad at least one of our fathers includes us.
