Story description

The week before Christmas is probably the most stressful week for the Christmas elves. Not only they've been working hard the whole year to make all the presents for children, but the last week before the Santa's journey is all about finishing and counting. There are dozens, hundreds even, little elves dressed in red and green robes.

Their hats are pointy with a bell hanging from the top. Their faces are always smiling and the smallest things make them extremely happy. Santa's workshop is the biggest, the widest and the tallest hall in all of the North. Inside the workshop, Christmas elves make, put together, paint and wrap Christmas presents. Every elf has its job. Some of them make toys, some of them color them and some use the shiniest wrapping paper to make beautiful gifts for children.

There was one elf who was a little bit different from all the others. His name was Nimble and his job was to assemble all the pieces of toys and put them together. He was very handy with various tools, like hammers, nails and screwdrivers.

His job was to make sure every toy would endure falls and resist breaking.

His working group consisted of 50 elves, all divided in pairs. His fellow work partner was a bit of a lazy type.

He wouldn't care much about the durability of toys, neither would he take care of proper assembly of them.

-You know could make some children sad if they get broken or loose toys for Christmas?

- said the hard working Nimble.

-Couldn't you be more interested in your job? - he asked while hammering a wooden train toy.

-I really don't care.

We do this every year. Every year, everything the same.

I'm bored. - said his partner and forgot to put a nail into one of the wagons.

Nimble noticed it and quickly repaired it.

Nimble didn't mind his partner's laziness. He loved his job and the last week before Christmas was the best week of the year for him. Every other Christmas elf knew him well.

Everyone would always praise his ability to repair and assemble toys in fastest of ways.

-I wish I would be given a day off. That would be great! Imagine one day, the whole day of free time. I don't even know what I would do first! - said Nimble's partner and rested his head on his arms.

The track was starting to get full of unfinished toys and even Nimble couldn't put them all together at once. The pile was slowly getting big and he was starting to feel a bit anxious.

-Can you please start assembling the toys? We're holding the line!- said Nimble and exhaled drowsily.

He knew everyone would blame both of them for the trouble. If his partner gets in trouble, so does he. Work day was coming to end and slowly the Christmas workshop became empty and silent, everywhere but on one working spot.

Nimble didn't want Santa to think of him as being lazy and stalling the process of making toys, so he stayed at his working spot. He spent hours and hours into the night, just so he could finish all the toys and get rid of the toy pile.

He was very tired and sleepy, but he wouldn't give up.

-I have to finish this. This is my job, my only job. All the hard work would be in vain.

- he thought to himself and rubbed his tired eyes.

The morning came and with the first rays of sun, the hall was slowly becoming crowded and full. Everyone was whistling and laughing and started doing their usual chores. Nimble couldn't stay awake anymore. He cleared the track, exhaled and fell asleep. His partner continued to work carelessly, when suddenly a loud bell ringing could be heard.

-Santa's coming! -few of the elves yelled. Santa was inspecting the elves, making sure everything's at place.

He soon noticed Nimble sleeping.

He approached him and tapped his shoulder.

-Nimble! Wake up! You're sleeping! - his work partner yelled and threw a music box at his direction.

-Huh?! - Nimble suddenly jumped and his hat fell on the floor. He reached down to get it when he noticed someone standing behind him. He turned around and looked up.

-Santa! - he inhaled with hand over his mouth.

-I'm sorry, Santa! I don't know why I fell asleep. I was so tired. - he was explaining.

-Seriously, I don't know how you can even do such a thing. -his partner elf replied with crossed arms.

-That's outrageous. -he continued. - You shouldn't be saying things like that.

- Santa said and rubbed his long grey beard. -I watch closely every single elf in my Workshop. I know exactly who does what and when he does it. I know you haven't been working as you should be. I know poor Nimble here spent the whole night finishing your work too.

- he looked at Nimble but pointed a finger towards his partner. -He fell asleep to fix your mistakes and your laziness.

That's why you will be working whole day alone and you will assemble every toy perfectly. I will be watching you whole day. And dear Nimble over here...

- Santa turned towards tired little elf , -will have whole day off. Free time. For himself.

-he concluded. -You should know, hard work pays off better.

-he said and took Nimble by his hand. -Now, sweet Nimble, let's get you some decent breakfast.
