ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I AM PARTICULARLY DELIGHTED to introduce Eat Right 4 (for) Your Baby, a book I have wanted to write since Martha and I gave birth to our first child almost twelve years ago. Today, Martha and I are the parents of two healthy daughters. I have discovered such a deep wellspring of joy in my spirited, happy children that I feel tremendous compassion for the couples who come to me with their myriad problemscouples who are striving to attain the same experiences that have become the cornerstones of my life. With this book I am able to offer the best that naturopathic and blood type science have to offer, to guide parents-to-be through the most significant journey of their lives.
This effort has been a collaborative process, and I want to express my deep thanks to the people who have been involved in its creation.
I am most grateful to Martha Mosko DAdamo, not only my partner in life and in parenting but also my partner in bringing the valuable wisdom about blood type to the world. Martha daily provides love, support, insight, and inspiration to all of my endeavors.
Catherine Whitney, my writer, and her partner, Paul Krafin, are invaluable word masters, who have once again captured exactly the right tone in tackling this sensitive topic. Their agent, Jane Dystel, continues to provide advice and encouragement.
I would also like to acknowledge others who have made significant contributions to this book: my colleague Bronner Handwerger, N.D., whose research and clinical abilities helped make this book comprehensive and practical; my friend Cathy Rogers, N.D., a naturopath/midwife whose compassion and understanding of the emotional and medical concerns of pregnant women has added a wonderful element to this book; and my associate Heidi Merritt, who continues to make an important contribution to the work.
My literary agent and friend, Janis Vallely, always takes time to listen and advise. Her quiet guidance and personal support make the work possible.
Amy Hertz, my editor at Riverhead/Putnam, has been the force behind the success of all the blood type books, and she continues to guide my work with dedication and skill.
As always, I am extremely grateful to the wonderful staffs at Riverhead Books and Putnam. They have been tireless and enthusiastic, and their efforts have made it possible to continue bringing this important work to the market.

INTRODUCTION
A Personal Word from Martha DAdamo
BLOOD TYPE AND BABIES are two realities that have forever changed my life. Blood type came first, in 1985, when I met Peter DAdamo. He transformed the way I viewed food and, in the process, transformed who I was as an individual. Babies arrived laterClaudia in 1991 and Emily in 1994.
When we decided to start our family, Peter and I had the same concerns every other young couple hascould we conceive, would our child be healthy, would we be good parents? As we looked forward to the future, we also looked back into our family histories for information that would be helpful.
Although our backgrounds were very different, neither of us had family histories of troubled pregnancies, births, or miscarriages. Further, we knew our blood typesI am Type O and Peter is Type A. This gave us important information about our genetic profiles, as well as a basis for establishing nutritional needs. What we didnt know was what we would actually experience. Every couple is unique, every pregnancy is different, and every baby is unlike any other baby that came before.
I was lucky that my mother was still alive during both my pregnancies. I pestered her with questions about her pregnancies unmercifully, until one day she said, When I was having all my children, I went to the doctor, he told me to drink lots of fluidsit didnt matter what, just that it was fluid. He said when I started to have contractions, get to the hospital. I went to the hospital, they knocked me out, and when I woke up, I had a baby.
This was a stunning example of how things have changed so dramatically in the world of obstetrics. In the fifties, most obstetricians were men, and the system seemed to be set up to accommodate them rather than their pregnant patients. Women were rarely encouraged to ask questions about their pregnancies and about all the changes they were experiencing. Little or no nutritional guidance was provided. Nor was there much attention given to toxic behaviors like smoking or alcohol consumptionissues that are well understood today. Breast-feeding had become dclass, as the development of formula was heralded as better than mother can provide and more convenient.
