Contents
This book is made accessible for all readers from those with little or no personal experience of ancestral healing to the more advanced practitioners. Within these pages, we offer an in-depth and down-to-earth guide to ancestral healing practices. The book includes a wide range of meditations, healing techniques and rituals to heal, honour and remember our ancestors.
We live in a society that constantly refers to experts, forgetting our own personal life experiences and relationships with family members do actually qualify us to be able to address the ancestral healing practices taught in this book ourselves. What we find is that people just need a little encouragement if theyre to awaken the ancestral healer within and use their gifts with confidence.
This book is a journey through the labyrinth of personal ancestral heritage, guiding everyone, regardless of whether they have spiritual beliefs or not, to draw on the power of the ancestors. Whether you put your trust in God and an afterlife, or in science and genetics, the power of those who went before you can be a guiding force in the life ahead of you.
By discovering our family history in addition to our DNA, ethnicity and culture, we can recognize the wonderful and the terrible truths about our roots. This knowledge can help us to understand more about who we are and this book offers powerful tools to heal the effects of genetic memories on our wellbeing. Through this awareness, we can begin to appreciate our personal restrictions, behaviours and intrinsic beliefs about the world around us. Most importantly, we can learn why and how negative influences and traumas passed down through our family lineage can affect not only relationships and our physical and mental health, but also our spiritual connections.
Even gifts and talents are inherited attributes that often skip generations. Even if our living relatives dont display any interest in our chosen direction, or might even seem positively opposed to it, we might well discover a personality further back who has the same talents and gifts as we do. Some of us are lucky enough to be born to a family where our innate talents and unique personalities are naturally encouraged and nurtured by those around us, while others arent.
Its never too late to retrieve our own creative path and to heal the wounds and conditions that run through our family tree. By being aware that were reflecting the same issues our family learned and inherited, we can then identify these influences, which can have tremendous value in gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves. In learning about family heritage, we can start to understand how were affected by our family and find ways to heal their influences.
There are practices, rituals, exercises and meditations that can be applied to work with your inheritance, which can help you to embrace whats positive and heal whats negative. From here, youll have the capacity to decide whether to continue with those patterns and in effect pass them on to the next generation, or you can resolve to make a break from the past. Furthermore, youll gain an understanding of your relationship with the ancestors by connecting with them, communicating with them and honouring them.
If you suffer from any mental health issues and/or are grieving for a loved one, then this may not be the time for you to work on the darker aspects of your family heritage. If this is the case, its an area of ancestral healing you can return to when youre able to address those traumas that you and your family may have experienced in the past.
Our story
Our interest in the spirit world and ancestors started when we were young. We always had a feeling theres an existence beyond this Earth.
Terry OSullivan
Just after the Second World War, we were living with my grandparents. I shared a bedroom with my parents and I remember having to remain silent because my grandfather in the adjoining bedroom had to get up at 5 a.m. for work. As a young boy, I remember seeing both people and things that others couldnt. Nobody understood or cared about what I saw and theyd call it my make-believe world.
After we moved away, the images began to fade, coinciding with when I was gearing up to find my place in the world. I had, in fact, almost forgotten my earlier experiences with make-believe and it was only when I had one during Holy Communion at the local Catholic Church (my father was Catholic) that my interest was again kick-started by the theological mysteries, such as encounters with angels and the unseen world of spiritualism.
If I told anybody Id seen an angel, nobody would have believed me. But I had, and Id also experienced the sensation of being lifted out of my body into a dominion of great light. My secret world continued to be illuminated by visions and dreams. The only person I could turn to was Grandma Cooke, my maternal grandmother. She was a teller of fortunes whose mother was a pureblood Romany gypsy, and at last I found I was able to share my make-believe world, through which I discovered an ancestral legacy that would instinctively guide me. The years that followed enabled me to accept fully my make-believe world as a reality.
