C omputers are the heart and soul of todays business world, and even of our personal world. Put simply, a computer can be defined as a machine used to speed up your work.

A computer has two main components: hardware and software.

Hardware consists of all the electronic components you see and feel on your computer, and some you dont see or feel. There are input components, like your mouse, keyboard, scanner, etc.; and there are output components, like monitors (screens), printers, etc.

In this guide we will be concentrating mostly on software.

Software is everything on your computer that works with the help of the hardware. Its what brings your computers hardware to life.

There are two primary types of software: application software and systems software. Systems software works in the so-called background (also called the back end). Examples of these are task managers, Internet browsers, and spooling to prepare documents for printing. Application software, meanwhile, is for end users. When you prepare documents and spreadsheets, send and receive e-mails, create slide presentations, review photos on your screen, and play computer games, youre using application software.

There are literally thousands of software applications in use globally, but very few are used regularly enough that its necessary for you to know about them.
