INTRODUCING THE INSTANT POT
I f asked to describe the Instant Pot, I would use words like miracle worker, life saver, and kitchen wonder. Ever since I decided to have a go at the Instant Pot, there has been no turning back for me. Cooking, prepping and planning meals are no longer "chores" that take hours. The Instant Pot is a multi-purpose kitchen appliance that combines the functions of a pressure cooker, yogurt maker, rice cooker, steamer and slow cooker in one device. So, it helps you save the cost of buying these cooking appliances, in addition to saving your precious time.
The Instant Pot, which is made up of different parts, has an outer pot, which serves as the base of the cooker, and also doubles as the source of heat for the pot. There is also an inner pot which is where you put whatever you are cooking in, and it is place in the outer pot. To cap it all is the lid, which is very similar to that of a regular pressure cooker. It has a silicone ring around it that seals the pot tightly and ensures that the inside of the pot is pressurized during cooking. The lid has two valves on top of it, namely the float valve and the pressure release valve. The float valve serves as a signal to show when the cooker is pressurized and when it is not.
The valve pops up when during cooking to show that the pot is pressurized and goes back down when the pressure has been completely released and is safe to open the pot. While the pressure release valve is used to let out pressure quickly from the pot when done cooking.
WHAT CAN THE INSTANT POT DO
T he Instant Pot boasts of being able to perform many functions in the kitchen, and I can tell you that it lives up to all those claims. The Instant Pot functions mainly as a pressure cooker, however, it can also be used as a slow cooker, steamer, warmer, saut pan, yogurt maker, and rice cooker, and has different buttons for selecting these preset modes. Preset Cooking Modes The Instant Pot has buttons that are preset to cook certain kinds of food at a predetermined pressure and time. Some of these preset buttons include rice, soup, poultry, steam, meat, porridge, stew, chili, multigrain and beans.
These buttons vary according to the type and model of Instant Pot you are using. Other buttons that are programmable can be adjusted to suit your needs at a particular time are manual, the + and - buttons, cancel/keep warm, saut, timer, and adjust buttons. Temperature/Pressure Control The cooker is considered safe to use due to various safety mechanisms that has been put in place to ensure that the risk of any hazard/accident is at a minimum. The pot has an inbuilt thermostat that keeps the temperature within a certain range considered safe by the manufacturer. This ensures that the pot doesn't overheat. The Instant Pot is also able to regulate the pressure in the pot, so that the pressure is not too much, and also is not too little.
Also, the pot is able to let out the pressure built up in the pot instantly using its quick pressure release functionality. Intelligent Delay The Instant Pot not only has the ability to time when cooking should stop, it can also be used to time when to start cooking at the time you choose. That is, it can delay the time to start cooking by whatever time set, be it 1 hour, 2 hours or even 24 hours. Yes, it's that intelligent. Leak Detection If there is a leak in the lid of a pressure cooker, it will not be able to build up pressure inside the cooker. The Instant Pot is able to detect if there is a leak in the lid, by measuring the rate at which pressure builds up.
If there is a leak and the pressure does not build up then the Instant Pot automatically switches to "keep warm" mode. Closed Lid Mechanism The Instant Pot is able to detect if the lid is not closed tightly, and when this happens pressure cooking cannot be used on the Instant Pot. When the lid is tightly closed, only the "keep warm" and "saut" buttons can be used. Conversely, when the lid is closed properly and pressure starts building inside the cooker, the lid of the Instant Pot is automatically locked and cannot be opened while pressure cooking is ongoing. The lid can only be opened when the pressure has been completely released.
