A LETTER FROM DONNA PAYNE

H ere we are again, writing another Microsoft Word for Law Firms book. Our first of this title was published in March 1998, when we released Word 97 for Law Firms. The title went on to become a bestseller for computer books, shocking both us and many in the publishing world who had passed on the opportunity. This book, Word 2013 for Law Firms, is our thirteenth to date. Weve continued this tradition as a direct result of the feedback we receive from people like you who have read our previous Word for Law Firms books and demand that the series continue. As Microsoft Word has changed and improved over the years, weve been able to focus on areas within the software of specific interest to the legal community. Not everyone has time to delve deeply into the software, which necessitates a book that covers all of the relevant functionality used in the creation of legal documents.

A friend and former executive at Microsoft reminded me recently that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Microsoft Word is still the leading word processing software in terms of popularity, and most law firms and legal departments have successfully made the switch. In spite of that fact, books specifically designed to address the legal professionals needs are few and far between. In our legal world, courts dictate many formatting and other document requirements, which must be adhered to without exception. Additionally, there is also a constant need to create complex, lengthy documents that also have unique formatting requirements. That is where this book differs from other books designed for the broader audience of professionals using Word 2013.

Our approach this time around was to go out to the greater community at large and ask external subject matter experts, even from competing companies, for their feedback and comments on certain features of Word 2013. In this book, youll find inclusions from our amazing team here at PayneGroup, alongside leading industry experts including Andrea Cannavina, Barrie Hadfield, Charlene LeMaire, Clare Waller, Craig Ball, Gina Buser, Jan Berinstein, Jeffrey Roach, Dean Leung, Linda Sackett, Marcus Bluestein, Monica Bay, Norm Thomas, Peggy Weschler, Randi Mayes, Ray Zwiefelhofer, and Sherry Kappel. This is the great brain trust from which we had the great fortune to collaborate. There are many more people that we would have liked to include but alas, we wanted to keep the book to a manageable size.

Its always been PayneGroups mission to help make the software tools available to the legal community easier to understand and use. With this goal in mind, we not only offer our Word for Law Firms publications, but training, consulting, and migration services as well. Where we see a unique software need not being addressed, we step up to the plate and create our own. For example, our Metadata Assistant was the first metadata cleaner available on the market and is now used by millions of people around the world. PayneGroup has created numerous software tools over the past two decades to assist with the creation and editing of legal documents as well as providing a number of security programs that address security and privacy concerns. We listen to what you have to say and sincerely appreciate your feedback.

Yours truly,

Donna Payne

CEO and founder of PayneGroup, Inc.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

In the 20 years weve been in business, and 13 books later, we have now worked with so many people that it would be impossible to thank everyone individually. Please know that we appreciate every client, some of whom have been with us from the very beginning and who are beyond loyal. A competitor once told us that they are never successful in trying to unseat us from an organization because of the loyalty that they have toward PayneGroup. You have our heartfelt gratitude.

We would also like to thank everyone who has purchased this book as well as previous versions. So many people have showed us their now dogged-eared, marked-up, sticky-note copies that they have held onto even years after the retirement of that version of software. We hope that you will find this book as helpful, and ultimately, as well used as our previous books.
