So what exactly is Minecraft you might ask?
Well, Minecraft is what is known as a sandbox building game. It lets people build and explore a nearly infinite 3D world. It allows players to play the game on their own terms. Some of my friends enjoy exploring all the different maps, while others want to build massive cities and towns. I personally enjoy Survival mode, exploring my creative side building things while trying to survive.
Minecraft is currently available on the PC as well as various other devices such as the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Android and IOS. All the editions are a little different, with the PC version being the most sophisticated and having the largest online community. Minecraft can be played as either a single player or in a multiplayer game mode.
Minecraft is one of those games you can pick up and start having fun with right away, However, this game is incredibly deep and complex taking a long time to truly master. Considering it's one of the best selling games of all time, this is a game that is sure to be around for many years to come.
Let's get started!
Chapter 1 - Welcome to The World Of Minecraft
I n this chapter, you will find:
- An Overview Of Minecraft
- Minecraft Game Modes: Customizing Your Game
Overview of Minecraft
M inecraft at first seems like a world much like our own. The sun comes up in the morning and goes down in the evening. Storms happen, and there are animals roaming the countryside you can either farm with, tame or use as food. In certain modes you'll also have to survive against danger, enemies and even hunger.
Pretty quickly, you'll realize that the world of Minecraft is a never ending variety of different worlds to roam in. There are various terrains (called biomes) and monsters (called mobs) that you will encounter and have to deal with.
Minecraft is a game focused on customization, exploration and creation. You can play with yourself or others. You choose from a variety modes and difficulty settings. You can even make modifications to the game by changing bits of code.
Minecraft is an unusual game in that everyone can play the game differently. Some will merely want to build, others will want to explore, and many will just want to try and survive whatever the game can throw at them. You can mine, farm, build, dig, jump, fight and use weapons all in an open world environment. However you'd like to play the game you can.
Minecraft Game Modes: Customizing Your Game
T here's a four different ways you can play Minecraft. That means you can tailor Minecraft into the type of game that suits your personal interests. The different games modes are Creative, Survival, Adventure and Hardcore. In this section I'll go over each of the modes and what makes them unique.
Creative
As the name implies, creative mode places a premium on creating content. In this mode you'll have unlimited access to whatever resources you desire. You'll also already have the ability to use any craftable item without having to make them yourself.
You won't need to waste time collecting and acquiring resources while in Creative mode. You also won't have to worry about being harmed by attacks or falling. The only ways to die in this mode are falling into the Void (basically like center of the earth, it's the layer below bedrock), or executing a /kill command.
In this mode you also have the ability to fly and check out your creations from new angles. Another big perk in this mode, is that blocks will break instantly, unlike in other modes where you'll need to take time or use tools to break down items.
Survival
This is my favorite mode. In this mode you're initial goal is simple. Survive.
This is the default mode in Minecraft and it's the mode that resembles traditional gaming the most. You basically start off the game with no tools and no identity. Unlike creative mode you don't have unlimited resources, in fact you have zero resources. Anything you want you'll need to get or make yourself.
In Survival mode your vulnerable to hunger and damage from attacking monsters. You're also vulnerable to other things like falling, drowning and lava. I find this mode more satisfying because when I build things I need to take my players safety and health into consideration. If I'm building a wall, I know I need to be careful when constructing the top because I might fall and kill myself.
When you die you will respawn, either in the last bed you were sleeping in or at the very start of the game. However, you lose all your experience, loot, and any gear you had will be scattered around the place you died. You'll have about 5 minutes to try and recollect items before they despawn and are gone. Starting over sucks! Trust me!
You can toggle the difficulty in this mode making life easier or incredibly difficult. Whatever you're personal preference. I like somewhere in the middle. I don't want to be dealing with spawning mobs of monsters constantly. I like a little breathing room.
While Minecraft is purposefully vague on story line you can play this mode in a semi conventional way. You'll basically start on a world resembling our own and you'll begin to build up your experience and resources. Eventually you'll be able to build yourself a portal to a new world called The Nether (kinda like Hell), where you'll need to continue gathering resources and experiences. Finally, you'll be able to access another realm called The End (think Purgatory), where you'll need to find and defeat the Ender Dragon. Once you've done that don't worry the game continues on, and you're able to go back exploring and building, keeping all your items and experience intact.
Hardcore
This mode is brutal. It's basically survival mode but your difficultly is always on high. When you die in Hardcore mode you're dead for good. Not only that but the entire world you were just inhabiting is deleted. Pretty brutal!
Adventure
The final mode I'll discuss is Adventure mode. This mode is basically a hybrid of Survival and Creative mode. You can visit other peoples maps and roam around and explore like in Creative Mode but you can't just one click break things. You need to have the proper tools like in Survival mode. This mode is great for showing your friends the maps you created without allowing them to destroy what you've built.
Chapter 2 - How To Survive When Just Starting Out
I n this chapter, you will find:
How To Survive When Just Starting Out
How to Survive When Just Starting Out
U nlike Creative mode where you start off with near godlike power, in Survival mode you begin at absolute zero. No tools, no food, no weapons, no resources whatsoever. This means surviving initially becomes a challenging task. Eventually you'll get to a point where you can operate a farm or protect a city, maybe even defeat the Ender Dragon. However, you're nowhere near that point yet.
In order to survive your first night you need to create tools, get food and secure yourself a shelter. You start the game off a little bit after dawn (days in Minecraft are 20 minutes half daytime and half at night). This means you only have 10 real time minutes before night falls and mobs of creatures begin to threaten your existence. You need to be as efficient with your time as possible when first starting out.
