Everybody cheats. On diets, that is. Marissa Lippert, twice voted one of New Yorks best nutritionists, has seen her clients cheat and give up, again and again-so she created an eight-week weight loss program that starts with cheating. As her thousands of success stories show, its a matter of accepting the cheats, building them into the week, and moving on. In eight weeks, Lipperts clients lose up to twenty pounds, and with her new book everyone else can, too.
Part I of The Cheaters Diet helps readers map out their social calendar, gym time, food shopping time, and cooking time. Each week has a food plan and fun recipes, most of which take less than twenty minutes to prepare, as well as an illustrative cheating lesson or two.
Part II is the sneaky part, in which Lippert shows when, where, and how to cheat. There are two kinds of cheating: accidental and purposeful. For the former, Lippert shows readers how to make up for too much fat, sugar, meat, or booze. And for the latter, she takes a proactive approach, with topics like Extra Baggage: How to Compensate for Travel Food, Fast Food, and Eating Out
Throughout, readers will learn how to eat healthfully and well. The Cheaters Diet is a sassy, motivating, and effective plan for those who want to have their chocolate and drink wine, too.

INTRODUCTION
Cheaters Always Win...

Heres one of the best pieces of advice youll ever receive: Cheaters always win. Sounds nothing like what your mother taught you, but when it comes to what you eat, its the best-kept secret to smart, sustainable weight loss and a style of eating that is actually enjoyable, healthful, and rich with indulgence. Bottom line, this is a book about cheating and eating. Get excited. Youll not find any deprivation within these pages, so you can breathe a little easier. The words finally out: Diets dont work, plain and simple. You know this, I know this, and the millions of other women and men, nearly 60 percent of Americans, attempting to shed a few pounds know this. But heres what so many of us still dont knowhow to eat. And Im not talking about proper fork and knife etiquette. I mean the basic building blocks of a healthy, balanced, sane diet, one that actually includes chocolate, cheese, and wine. It always amazes me to think about the countless clients, family, friends, and acquaintances who plead, I just want to know how to eat... normally, wholesomely, and healthfully without being restricted to bland, boring diet food. And learning how to cook a simple chicken breast that doesnt resemble a burnt hockey puck would be nice, too. Can you please, for the love of God, help me?
The Definition of Cheating
Before we get ahead of ourselves, what really defines cheating? Its a word with a pretty naughty connotation. Isnt cheating what always kills our valiant efforts to lose a few pounds? Were so fearful of it, yet it feels so damn good. Who doesnt like being a little naughty once in a while, honestly? This book erases the dividing line between good and bad food and turns the notion of cheating upside down, making it more acceptable in hopes of making foodreally amazing, mouthwatering foodsomething you can actually enjoy. Relishing in cheating, or indulging in good quality food, allows you to love everything that you bite into.
The following chapters will help you cheat the system. Its a no-frills but extremely fun and tasty guide that halts the vicious cycle of good food versus bad food dieting and roller-coaster weight lossand weight gain. Instead, you and your rear end will reap the benefits of utterly delicious foodand understand how to fit it easily into your life, shop for it, and cook it. Youll begin to see healthy, delicious food in a fresh, new light, and those extra pounds will start to fall off and stay off. Youll be able to bring balance between the cheat foods you love and a solid foundation of healthy basics.
Youll master how to navigate the grocery store and plan for the week aheadsnacks, simple lunches and breakfasts, and quick, healthy weeknight dinners. Youll lose weight wisely (without fear or loathing), youll connect with your food, your hunger, and your cravings, and youll understand how to keep off those damn pounds for good, once and for all! And youll be ready and able to accomplish all of this, even with the inevitable slips and falls, because youre planning ahead, thinking more strategically. Youll have an outline of goalseach and every week. You want to live well, eat well, and lose weight all at once. Who doesnt? Its all at your fingertips, and the tip of your tongue. Youll be playing the game smarter, not harder, in no time, and cheating it up all the way.

Before we go further, who am I really to be writing about all this stuff? Im a registered dietitian (so Id better know what Im talking about). Thinking, talking, and writing about great food and good health is what I do, and Im passionate about it. Its a love affair that was sparked by the long line of masterful cooks and bakers in my family and that was solidified by the sights and smells of my mothers and grandmothers kitchens. My mom started me young in the kitchen and without realizing it, my family helped shape me into the cheating nutritionista-foodie I am today. Healthful, home-cooked meals, fresh fruit on the counter for snacking, and not a sugary cereal in sight were the focus, while ice cream and homemade brownies in the freezer and chips in the pantry served as understated but unrestricted treats. I was pretty lucky, looking back. I unconsciously grew up understanding good food, great cooking, and healthful balance.
From all that, I emerged as an avid home cook and a restaurant lover who now lives and works in New York City. Im in my early thirties, am forced to make do with the tiny kitchen in my apartment, am typically on the go, or rather five minutes behind, and am always finding fresh, simple ways to cook for just oneor for a group of ten. Im known as the organizer among my friends, scouting out new local restaurants to try and hosting impromptu dinners. I come from a close-knit group of friends who love to go out and party just as much as we love to stay in and get completely wrapped up in solid conversation. I will rarely pass up a good glass of wine or four (hey, we all have those nights). Some of my favorite foods are ice cream (the real stuff), french fries, and a salty piece of sharp Pecorino Romano cheeseright up there with summer cherries, peppery arugula, and my mothers roasted carrots. And over the years, Ive worked with hundreds and hundreds of individuals, helping them to improve their eating habits, lose weight, increase energy, figure out when and why to fit in grocery shopping and cooking, and to do it all without going nuts. In other words, Ive heard it all (or at least a whole lot of what your needs and frustrations are) and Im actually a lot like youjust a fun-loving, regular gal trying to do right for herself and her body.
My hope is that this book will serve as a road map, helping to make your life and the way you view food easier, healthier, greener, and hell of a lot more indulgent and appetizing. So get in the drivers seatthe following pages praise real food, real women, and real life. Visions of your skinny jeans are on the horizon! See, told ya cheaters always win. Lets get this party started.
