FORTNITE: BATTLE ROYALE THE BASICS
Fortnite: Battle Royale has become one of the most popular games in the world for a whole lot of really good reasons. Its fun, challenging, always evolving, offers many different gaming experiences, and its free!
T he game can be experienced on a Windows PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, iPad, or Android-based gaming system. If you switch between gaming systems, youll discover that the Windows, Mac, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game are extremely similar.
Discover the Main Game Play Modes
When most gamers think of Fortnite: Battle Royale, they think of the Battle Royale game play modes.
While experiencing Duos mode, you and one other gamer (either an online friend or a stranger) can team up and compete against 98 other gamers during a match. You guessed it: the goal is to wind up being the last soldier standing when the match ends.
In Solo mode, for example, 100 gamers, each controlling one soldier, get airlifted by the Battle Bus to a mysterious island. The objective is to fight your way to become the last soldier alive at the end of the match and win #1 Victory Royale. To accomplish this, everyone else must perish.
The Squads game play mode in Fortnite: Battle Royale allows you to team up with three other gamers, and then fight as a squad against 24 other squads. The goal is to eliminate everyone else by the end of a match.
On any given day, there is also a handful of other game play modes available. Each offers a totally different set of challenges, but all take place on the mysterious island that the game developers at Epic Games have created. Shown here, a Team Rumble match (a temporary game play mode) is about to begin.
Get Acquainted with the Mysterious Island
As youll discover, theres a lot to see and experience on the mysterious island while trying to avoid the deadly storm.
This island is comprised of more than 20 unique points of interest that are labeled on the island map. This is what the island map looked like near the end of season 9. In between the various points of interest are countless other places to visit, explore, and fight in, although these places are not specifically listed on the island map.
Shown here is The Block, which is part of the Fortnite: Battle Royale island map. This is an area that Epic Games uses to feature content created by gamers who design incredible island maps (specifically to meet The Blocks specifications) using Fortnite: Creative . As youll discover, anyone can submit their maps to be featured within The Block, but out of the thousands of entries, only a few get accepted.
To help your soldier get around the island, there are a bunch of different types of vehicles at your disposal, along with a network of slipstreams (shown here) and ziplines. Like many other items, weapons, and locations in Fortnite, at the start of Season 10, slipstreams were vaulted in some game play modes, including Solo, but could make a return anytime in the future.
Depending on where you are on the island, youre also likely to encounter natural phenomenon, like Rifts or Geysers, that your soldier can leap into in order to travel around the island faster than on foot. A Geyser is shown here.
Exploration of the island during a match is essential, but equally important is engaging in combat, so you can eliminate the enemy soldiers you encounter. In order to prepare for each battle, youll need to equip your soldier with the best selection of weapons, ammo, and loot items. As you can see, a soldier is using a Zipline here to quickly travel from one location to another. Several areas of the island feature a network of Zipline routes.
A Quadcrasher (shown here) is one of several types of vehicles that can often be found and then driven throughout the island. This type of vehicle is rugged, can go almost anywhere, and can hold multiple soldiers (if youre playing a Duos, Squads, or Team-oriented match, for example).
