    Introduction

Social media shows us a very unrealistic face of everything. It makes you feel that you have thousands of friends when in reality, you don't.

    - Dr. Prem Jagyasi

My name is Alex Wong. If you're reading this, chances are that you are interested in de-cluttering your digital life. Perhaps you spend too much time on social media, and have trouble making time for more important things in life. Perhaps you find it difficult to be productive with all of your digital devices, and you want an action plan for reorganizing your digital life.

Either way, you've made the first step by picking up this book. After living as a digital nomad for a number of years, I've learned a large number of tips, tricks, guidelines, and exercises for maintaining an organized digital life. Since seeing how much of a big difference this made in my life, I want to give this ability to others, so they can take control of their digital lives like I did.

I was born in the 1980s, and I grew up in the 90's and early 2000's. Being born during this period gave me the opportunity to see how life was before the internet and smartphones. Many people who already had these things growing up don't truly realize how much these things have revolutionized our lives.

I remember getting my first desktop computer when I was about 16 years old, well after most people get their first smartphones these days. This computer was huge, and bulky with a monitor, hard drive, printer, and scanner. To me at the time, it was one of the most amazing things I had ever seen. I remember the first time I ever connected to the internet like it was yesterday.

Of course, the internet at the time required usage of the phone line, which would take a number of minutes just to connect in the first place. If anybody tried to call your line while you were connected, they would get a busy signal. If somebody on your end tried to use the phone, they could even end up kicking you off the internet by accident! If you don't believe me, check out this scene from one of my favorite shows: Fresh Off The Boat .

Once you actually got connected, the speed wasn't anything to write home about. It was nowhere near as fast as 4G, 3G, or even 2G for that matter! It would often take you over 20 minutes to download a simple mp3 file, and forget about downloading movies! Of course, to me at the time, the technology was quite revolutionary. I can't imagine how much fast 5G will change the world as we know it.

Fast forward to my college days, when I received my first cell phone. This was another game changer. Of course, this was still before the first iPhone came out, so it was hardly anything like the smartphones we have nowadays. My first phone was a Sony Ericsson given to me by my sister. It had actual buttons on it, and the screen wasn't more than 1-2 inches. Eventually, I got my own smartphone when I was teaching in Busan, Korea years later. The smartphone made a huge difference in how I organized my life. It was so convenient! Of course, some of my students, who were 6 or 7 years of age at the time, had better smartphones than I did!

Nowadays, just like most people, I rely on my smartphone and the internet to keep me connected and help me run my online businesses. This technology has been a huge game-changer, and the internet has given me many opportunities that I would never have been able to get 20 years ago. In today's world, I can work from home (or anywhere for that matter). I've been able to build a business that can get clients and sales from anywhere in the world! In the old days, this never would have been possible.

That being said, there are some challenges to working online. For starters, I rarely work with other people. I spend a lot of time by myself in front of a screen, and I don't have a team or a company I work with. It can definitely become lonely at times. I started feeling like I never got away from my computer. I began to spend time outside of work checking work emails or communicating with clients. All of my time was basically being spent on one screen or another.
