Special considerations: Trails are accessed from Candelaria Road outside the park entrance before and after park hours. Park on the street where legal and walk west on the trail to a canal. Parking lot gates are locked at 5 p.m. and vehicles left in the lot are locked in overnight. If you plan on being on the trail after 5 p.m., park outside the gate.

Finding the trailhead: From I-40 in Albuquerque, take exit 157A to Rio Grande Boulevard. Turn right (north) onto Rio Grande Boulevard NW and drive 1.4 miles to Candelaria Road NW. Turn left (northwest) onto Candelaria Road NW and drive 0.6 mile to the park entrance. Turn right onto a park road and drive 500 feet to a large parking area east of the visitor center (GPS: 35.129682 N / -106.682616 W). Start from a trailhead on the west side of the parking lot (GPS: 35.129551 N / -106.682995 W), and hike 400 feet to a trail junction with a short trail to the visitor center. Begin the hike on the west side of the center.

    The Hike

The 38-acre Rio Grande Nature Center State Park lies along the east bank of the Rio Grande northwest of downtown Albuquerque. The park offers a fun family-friendly trail system that weaves through open woods along the river. The park and trails are on the Rio Grande flyway, a well-used migration route for birds and waterfowl. Bring binoculars and a bird book to spot some of the 250 different species of birds that live in or migrate through Albuquerque. The trail passes through a bosque, or riverside forest, which offers tall cottonwood trees that shade hikers and provide valuable habitat for riparian wildlife, including sandhill cranes, beavers, porcupines, coyotes, turtles, roadrunners, great blue herons, and bald eagles in winter.
