Introduction

For years, the world of 3D game development was largely closed off to the average amateur and enthusiast. The hurdle of developing a working 3D game engine was just too large of an obstacle for most to overcome. Thankfully, those days are over, and there are now free, state-of-the-art, open source 3D game engines available to everyone. The most popular of these engines is Unreal Engine, now in its 4th version.

This book will give you a solid foundation in 3D game development using Unreal Engine. You will first get an overview of the engine and learn the fundamentals of game development. You will learn how to construct breathtaking environments for your game, limited only by your imagination. You will learn how to script logic and define rules for your game. The book will teach you key gaming concepts, such as players, input, collisions, and damage. You will learn how to craft user interfaces, so you can create menus, HUDs, and loading screens for your game. Finally, you will learn about the audio system Unreal uses so you can work with music and sound effects.

This book was designed with the non-programmer in mind, meaning anyone can jump right in and start learning game development today! It is also useful for experienced programmers who are curious about learning a visual scripting system.
