There is certainly evidence of other cultural impacts in flavors of foods that include other parts of the Caribbean, African, and even Chinese, just to name a few. Similarities in cuisine also exist between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, this primarily due to the close proximity of Cuba to these islands. Many of these cultures also share similar meal preparation methods to Cuban dishes.

Perhaps you became inspired to cook Cuban-style foods after a visit to Cuba, or you simply just wanted to experience the flavorful Cuban cuisine within the comfort of your own home with friends and family! Appetizers
1. Cuban-Style Stuffed Potatoes

Enjoy this tasty Cuban Appetizer when you serve it at your next social gathering!

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon minced jalapeno
  • cup raisins
  • cup white onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 lbs. Yellow potatoes, peeled
  • 1 lb. Ground beef
  • salt and pepper
  • flour to use for dusting

Directions:

1. Add your raisins in a bowl, and add 1 cup of boiling water. Soak for 10 minutes.

2. Bring a pot of saline water to a boil. Place peeled potatoes in a pot and cook until they are tender when pierced with a fork.

3. Meanwhile add the garlic, peppers, and onions into vegetable oil in a pan and cook on low heat until tender.

4. Add the cumin and paprika to pan, and cook for an additional 2 minutes while continually stirring to combine. Put your ground beef to the pan and cook until beef is browned.

5. Remove the raisins from the boiling water and place in with ground beef. Add the beef broth and then simmer for about 15 minutes, or until most of the liquid has been gone.

6. Garnish with some salt and pepper, then remove from heat and allow to cool.

7. Remove the cooked potatoes from water and mash potatoes. Add salt and pepper to potatoes and allow to cool overnight.

8. Add egg to cold mashed potatoes and stir to mix well.

9. With floured hands form the mashed potatoes, about cup and create a well in the center. Fill the well in the middle of potatoes with about 2 tablespoons of beef mixture. Add more mashed potatoes to form a sphere-shaped potato.

10. Repeat this step with remaining ingredients, making sure to flour each potato.

11. Deep fry your potatoes until they are golden brown in color.

12. Place potatoes in the oven at 200 Fahrenheit to keep warm until ready to serve.

2. Cuban-Style Ham Croquettes

This is an easy-to-prepare appetizer that will delight your party guests!

Ingredients:

  • 3 ham steaks, finely ground should be about 3 cups
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 8 teaspoons flour
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 cups of breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons squeezed lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, fresh and finely chopped
  • 2 cups warm milk
  • teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions:

1. In a pan placed over low heat, melt your stick of butter. Add the flour to the pan and beat until mixture is smooth. Add the milk, slowly, while continuing to beat and avoid lumps. Bring to a boil until condensed, then remove from heat.

2. In another pan, add the ham, lime juice, parsley, pepper, and salt. Cook for about 5 minutes or until dense. Remove pan from heat.

3. Cool ham mixture in a heat-safe bowl in the refrigerator overnight. If the mixture is not dense add about a cup of breadcrumbs to it.

4. Place breadcrumbs in a low bowl and the beaten eggs in another low bowl, and set up a sheet pan.

5. Make ham croquettes with the ham mixture to about a tablespoon size. Dunk each piece into beaten egg, then into the breadcrumbs.

6. Preheat your oven to 250 Fahrenheit and heat about 3-inches of oil in a pan to 375 Fahrenheit.

7. Deep fry your ham croquettes until they are golden brown.

3. Cuban Plantain Chips & Garlic Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 2 large green plantains (peeled)
  • vegetable oil
  • salt to taste
  • Mojo Sauce:
  • cup lemon juice
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 6 garlic cloves, minced
  • cup olive oil

Directions:

1. Slice each of your plantains into thins chips and place in a bowl.

2. Deep fry a handful of the chips at a time until golden brown. After browning, place chips in a bowl lined with a paper towel to help remove excess oil. Dust chips with salt.
