special, appreciated, loved, and beautiful too.
doing that for my mom.
compliments, a helping hand, and a sweet smile.
OO LA LA! I was asked to become a model while living in Paris, working as an artiste. This was way back in the day, when the thinking was that at my ripe old age of nineteen, I might already be too old for the business. The rule of thumb was This business will chew you up and spit you out long before you turn thirty!
Well, ten years later, at twenty-nine years of age and miraculously still in possession of a bustling modeling career, I wrote my first beauty book. I wanted to share what I had learned growing up on the beach in Malibu and what Id picked up from a fascinating industry that had taken me from California surfer girl to cover girl.
I NEVER imagined that I would be writing another beauty book thirty years later, or that I would STILL be modeling! But here I am today, doing BOTH!
The idea to write this book was prompted by the fact that People magazine celebrated my Big Six-O by placing me on their cover in a bathing suit.
At the same time, Sports Illustrated (who made me the first model to be on the cover of their legendary swimsuit edition three times in a row) was celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of their bestselling franchise, and they coaxed me into a bikini for a TV commercial.
This double whammy of exposure garnered quite a lot of attention! Ill have what shes having, article after article exclaimed, while proclaiming 60s the New 30! And those articles got me thinking: What am I doing right that I could share with other people? And if I keep it up, who knows? I could be writing my third beauty book in another thirty years. Maybe ninety will be the new sixty!
I know that I am not unique just because I look good for my age. Women of all ages are looking and feeling better than the number thats supposed to define them (which many dont reveal so we dont know they look great for sixty and actually believe them when they say theyre fifty-five, fifty-two, or forty-nine!). Thanks to healthy diets, exercise, and youth-enhancing beauty tricks, they can get away with lying about their age. But I say proclaim it and help redefine the way we think about the numbers! Now, having been part of the modeling industry for over forty years, I find myself in a unique position. During that time, I have had the great privilege of working with the best of the best in the worlds of beauty and style. And I simply want to share my good luck and everything Ive learned with all of you.
Our world thrives on perfection, and every celebrity has a collection of airbrushed photographs to prove it. But I think its important to remember that imperfect is sometimes the most perfect. Its an attitude the beauty and modeling worlds are embracing more and more, and I applaud that. I hope this book helps us all learn to love what makes each of us unique and to celebrate it. Because someone can have the most perfect face, body, hair, outfitbut without passion, curiosity, kindness, and compassion, that sort of beauty is only of fleeting interest.
I am also practical enough to know that when heading out to make the world a better place, you want to look your best. And I hope thats where this book comes in as a way to help you shine your brightest as you fill the pages of your life with value and meaning and the REALLY important stufffamily, friends, laughter, and LOVE!
I truly believe that everyone is beautiful in her own way. But we can all use a little advice that makes us feel prettier or maybe a bit more confident. Its like spit on a seashellbeauty loves a little polish! So I hope from this book you will learn the tricks of the trade plus some of my own tried-and-true tipsfrom recipes to fuel your day, to shortcuts Ive learned from the top hairdressers, makeup artists, colorists, wardrobe stylists, and dermatologists that will make you feel like a million bucks!
Basically I hope that after reading this book, you will look in the mirror and smile (that has always been my number one beauty secret). A smile has incredible power. It expresses kindness, compassion, generosity, and love without a single word. It can turn a stranger into a friend, it releases powerful feel-good hormones that make you feel happy, and it lights up a room, and your face, in the most delightful way. So smile! We all know that when you feel good, you look goodand thats a legendary formula guaranteed to make you SMILE!
Cheers
and
love!
