INTRODUCTION
IN the childrens book Mouse Soup, a shrewd mouse outwits a weasel who is about to make soup out of him.

You must fill the soup with stories! the mouse says. Or, it will not taste good. Soup tastes better with stories. So, in this book Ive shared my stories of cooking and family and those times when the recipe didnt go as planned. Once, when my husband, Rich, and I had just started dating, he rode his motorcycle over 100 miles in the rain and came back soaked through and freezing. I made him a big pot of vegetarian chili but discovered midway through cooking that I didnt have any bell peppers and used canned jalapeo peppers measure for measure instead.

Hot doesnt even begin to describe this chili. It took him and his roommate several days to make it through the whole pot, drowning it in sour cream, shredded cheese, and corn bread with copious amounts of water to chase it down. We survived that little adventure, and you, too, will recover from any cooking surprises that might come your way. I recently rediscovered the comforting power of soup while trying to find just one dish that could feed my whole family. In my house, each person has a different dietary restriction. Rich doesnt eat meat, my kids cannot eat dairy or wheat, and I opt for a Paleo-style diet.
