Dedication
I dedicate this book in everlasting memory of my mother, Fanja, my sisters, Dora and Ljuba, and my brother, Leiba, all of whom perished in the Riga massacre of November 30, 1941. I also dedicate this book to my father, Abram, with whom I spent my entire incarceration period and who passed away on April 19, 1990, in the United States.
I also dedicate this book to all my relatives and friends who perished during the Holocaust.
I sincerely hope my children, Sharon and Steven, and my son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Robert and Robin, will fully understand and respect the cruel exploitation their father had to endure during the Nazi era and that, despite this hardship, he ultimately found the strength to build a new life.
It is my heartfelt wish that my grandchildren, Benjamin, Elizabeth, and Aaron, will understand the evil power of man's inhumanity to man, which haunted their innocent grandfather as a youth. I also want them to be aware that such crimes should never again be committed, against the Jews or any other group of people.
I want especially to express profound appreciation to my wife, Tamara, also a Holocaust survivor, for her extensive cooperation and for accepting my absence for innumerable hours while I was occupied with writing my memoirs.

Preface
As incredible as it may seem, many people deny that the awesome event known as the Holocaust ever happened, despite the existing proof. It is, therefore, incumbent upon every survivor to tell his or her story for the sake of posterity; as an eyewitness, I want to share my experiences. Since the human memory is relatively short, I consider a written history to be the best way to preserve the past for the enlightenment of the future.
I wrote this book in my senior years, not because I wanted to but because I felt obligated to speak for the now-muted voices of my family and friends lost in the war. I am one of the few to be able to tell what happened to me and to thousands of other Jews under Nazi occupation in Riga, Latvia, and in other countries. My own suffering began soon after high school, when I was caught between two powerful forcesStalin's communism and Hitler's Nazism. Ruthlessness and repression were characteristic of both of these ideologies, and the stories told here represent many years of battling to overcome these evils.
