This volume brings together all the travel diaries of Sir Peter Pears (1910-1986), principal interpreter of Brittens works. Pears accompanied Britten on many of his trips and the record of their tour of the Far East in 1955 is of special interest. Here the sound of the gamelan orchestras enchanted Britten and deeply influenced his musical development. A valuable source of material on the musical development of both Pears and Benjamin Britten...a `must for those interested in either. OPERA JOURNAL (US)

Foreword
Peter Pears was a true patrician. He was a man of wide culture, which expressed itself in all aspects of his life: in his music-making, in his bearing, in his knowledgeable appreciation of all the arts, in his taste and sense of values. His many interests spanned cricket, good food and wine: he regarded as his greatest triumph the day that he scored 81 in a country trial test at the Oval in 1928; and he not only enjoyed fine food, but was also an inventive cook himself.
To think of him solely as one of the greatest singing artists of his time is to ignore the other many talents he possessed. His interest in early music brought to light composers who were neglected at that time: for instance, works by Schtz and Protin, by Dowland and the Elizabethans were championed by Pears. Through his unique performing artistry, he revealed these and other masters to the concert-going public. He commissioned new works from young composers to include in his repertory and gave many first performances of contemporary music. Quite apart from Britten works, the list of premires Pears gave is long and distinguished, encompassing over forty different composers.
As well as possessing a fine musician's ear, Pears had a remarkable eye for the visual arts. As in music, his informed enthusiasm ranged from the early and classical to the new and contemporary. He could guide one through the treasures of Venice with consummate expertise, often to places seldom frequented by tourists. On the other hand, his eye for works by young artists was keen and adventurous, spotting a talent before it had become generally recognized. Over the years he assembled a remarkable collection of paintings and pieces of sculpture which reflected his wide and eclectic taste.
