The Time To Change
or many years Karen and I have conducted marriage seminars all over the world. Because Karen doesnt teach, I am the one who shares the story of how God saved our marriage from the brink of divorce. But there is a big difference between the way I tell the story and how Karen tells it. As I read this book I was astounded at the details Karen remembered about how we dated and the early years of our marriage. When I share the story I tell the big picture. But in this book Karen shares the step-by-step and blow-by-blow of how we went from two young people madly in love to a young married couple on the brink of divorce, to a healthy married couple deeply in love again.
This book carefully chronicles the lives of two very dysfunctional people and how the power of God intervened to save us from disaster. We were both damaged goods when we got married and it is only by Gods grace that we made it. But the good news is that we did make it and our message is that you can make it too. The same love and grace that God extended to us He will extend to anyone who calls upon Him for help. The secret of our lives and marriage is putting God first. When Karen and I met I was not a believer. I got saved a week before we married and as you will read in this book it wasnt under good conditions. But Karen always had a heart for God. All through our dating relationship she sought God. But I didnt understand at the time the depth of pain she was experiencing on a personal level. All I knew was that she was beautiful, fun to be with and extremely shy. But as our relationship developed the worst in me came out. And it just made the pain in Karens life worse. In the midst of all of it I didnt want to lose her but I didnt know how to keep her.
We were both so wounded and dysfunctional. Even after becoming a believer I was still chauvinistic, domineering and verbally abusive. Without a doubt I would have destroyed our marriage if it had not been for Karens pursuit of God. I was a very selfish and insensitive man who was redeemed by a godly woman. And what is even more remarkable is the fact that she redeemed me through her love as she was going through incredible pain in her own life. A lot of her pain was in her the day I met her. But a lot of it came from me too.
If I have ever met a person who is an expert in dealing with inner pain it is Karen. She is the strongest person I know. But it isnt a strength she was born with. It is a strength that has been forged in the fires of life and marriage as she clung to God and wouldnt let go. That is what this book is about. It is about Karens story of how she faced every storm of life and came out more in love with God. It is about a woman who has endured incredible inner pain and found true healing in the arms of God. It is about a godly wife who overcame the pain of a distracted and abusive husband by the power and love of God.
I am so proud of Karen for writing this book. This is the true story of her life and our marriage. And the most important character in this story is God.
