Lethal Force: My Life As the Mets Most Controversial Marksman: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Lethal Force: My Life As the Mets Most Controversial Marksman" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Tony Long was the best shot the Met ever had. Under the codename Echo 7, he was licenced to kill bringing down scores of targets, sometimes with deadly force. In 1985 he opened fire on a suspect to save a four-year-old girl whose mother had been stabbed to death by her assailant. Two years later he was involved in another high profile shooting while confronting three armed criminals. On both occasions Tony was commended by the Metropolitan Police Commissioner. But in the spring of 2005, coming face to face with suspected drug dealer and armed robber Azelle Rodney, a volley of point blank shots would bring his career crashing to an end, tarnish his reputation and leave him fighting a murder charge and possible life sentence.
From life or death cases and botched operations to political fallouts, this book charts the controversial career from rookie seventies beat cop to Longs command of SO19 the Mets most elite specialist firearms unit. Longs personal testimony and professional insight raises serious issues about the duties, pressures and responsibilities that fall on the shoulders of those we task to risk their lives, and take the lives of others, in our name.

Prologue

All units: state red, state red!

Under the huge shadow of the M1 above us, our convoy of unmarked vehicles turned right at the mini roundabout. I threw down the map book and picked up my 36 and my Kevlar lid. I could see the silver VW Golf ahead, the rear-seat passenger was looking back , and I was getting a bad feeling. Graham, commander of our lead vehicle, Alpha, was now running the show and would need to pick the spot, soon. We were running out of time!

If suitable were looking to do it at the roundabout if he stops, came Grahams voice over the radio, then almost immediately: Attack, attack!

The G36 was already on my lap. My fingers tightened on the pistol grip and my thumb felt the resistance of the safety catch. I watched as Alpha commenced its overtake. My driver, Smudge, throttled it to close the gap on the accelerating lead vehicle and our target, the Golf, and its three edgy occupants. My eyes locked on to the rear passenger; he was in the nearside seat and unusually animated. I now had no doubt we were burnt. I sensed the atmosphere in the VW and imagined a heated discussion between the three men. I could taste the iron tang of blood. Adrenalin surged through my body.

Our car closed in rapidly. I wound down my window and felt the fresh breeze hit my face as I flipped on my Kevlar helmet. No time to worry with straps. I shouldered my weapon, instinctively brushing the safety to fire, my finger hovering beside the trigger guard. I was oblivious to anything other than that rear-seat passenger.

We were close now, just yards away. His hands were on the front seats and he was leaning forward as if he was bracing himself. Suddenly he pushed himself backwards and twisted to look over his left shoulder, then spun to look over his right. He seemed to look straight through me, oblivious to my presence.

Abruptly he threw himself down across the back seat. I was really close now, so close that if his window wasnt up I felt I could have reached out and touched the top of his head. Was he trying to hide or was he reaching for a gun? Just as quickly, he was up again, his shoulders hunched, his hands out of sight below the window of the rear passenger door.

He was armed, I was certain of it! Hed picked up the heavy, box-like, MAC 10 and was readying himself to fire. I held my breath as I aligned my iron sights on his centre mass, my finger curled around the trigger. No more time. I was going to have to shoot him and I was going to have to do it now. At any second my colleagues would be on foot and vulnerable, not only to the murderous rate of fire of the MAC 10 but also to my shots. Our car was alongside. No time to shout a warning! The rear half of the back passenger window shattered as the 65-grain soft points exploded from the stubby barrel of my Heckler & Koch.

And then he was gone.
