This book was produced in EPUB format by the Internet Archive.

The book pages were scanned and converted to EPUB format automatically. This process relies on optical character recognition, and is somewhat susceptible to errors. The book may not offer the correct reading sequence, and there may be weird characters, non-words, and incorrect guesses at structure. Some page numbers and headers or footers may remain from the scanned page. The process which identifies images might have found stray marks on the page which are not actually images from the book. The hidden page numbering which may be available to your ereader corresponds to the numbered pages in the print edition, but is not an exact match; page numbers will increment at the same rate as the corresponding print edition, but we may have started numbering before the print book's visible page numbers. The Internet Archive is working to improve the scanning process and resulting books, but in the meantime, we hope that this book will be useful to you.

Who Are the Real Racists at the United Nations?

This sermon was delivered by Rabbi Samuel Chiel at Temple Emanuel on Shabbat, November 15, 1975.

There are some who date the real beginning of Hitler's destruction of six million Jews to November 10, 1938. German Jews remember that date very well. They called it KRISTALLNACHT (the night of glass) On that terrible night, fires were ignited all over Germany, and the shattered plate glass of Jewish stores and institutions littered the streets of the cities and towns. Synagogues were burned to the ground. Over seven thousand Jewish businesses were destroyed. Thirty thousand Jewish men were arrested and sent to Buchenwald and Dachau.

No wonder Dr. Chaim Herzog, Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations, saw a connection between November 10, 1938 and November 10, 1975. On that day, when a majority of the U.N. voted to brand Zionism as "racism," Ambassador Herzog said that Hitler would have felt very much at home at the U.N. because, he charged, the United Nations was on its way to becoming "the world center of anti-Semitism."

The Arabs have learned Hitler's methods and are using them at the U. N. and everywhere else. They know that Hitler began his drive to annihilate our people by distorting the image of the Jew, by rewriting Jewish history, by fabricating some of the most terrible racial theories ever created.

And the Arabs, together with their Communist allies at the U.N. and the African states they have bought with gold and oil, are following in Hitler's footsteps and using the "big lie" against our people, knowing Goebbels' theory that if you tell a big lie long enough, people will begin to believe it.

When the General Assembly can vote and affirm such an obvious lie, it is clear that the nations of the world have already forgotten, or choose not to

remember, the terrible consequences of Hitler's lies the Holocaust which was directed against the Jew but ultimately, engulfed the whole world in the flames of Nazi murder and destruction.

Why are Jews so alarmed about this vote? After all, it's just a statement it has no teeth. There are no sanctions or other punitive measures associated with it.

The answer is that when you lose one-third of your people thirty years before, and you begin to see nations preparing a climate for another Holocaust, you have a right to be alarmed!

Jamil Baroody, the delegate of Saudi Arabia, made these comforting remarks during the U. N. debate. He said that the Zionists are "an alien people in our midst." He declared that their "exclusivity and exclusiveness, this setting themselves apart from other people, will be the bane of the Zionists," and he went on, if "God forbid, they become the scapegoat in any society," persons like himself "would be in the forefront to save them from the claws of those who would think that all their ills came from the Zionists." Sf we were in trouble, he would help us, he says, but then he added this ominous warning:

"Do not think what happened before may not recur."

Everybody knew he was referring to the Holocaust, and we Jews believe you, Mr. Baroody; it can happen again and you and your cohorts are doing everything possible to prepare the climate for it to happen again.

In their speeches and their propaganda, the Arabs are always careful to draw a distinction between Zionism and the Jewish faith. They know that in "polite" society, it is not considered proper to be openly anti-Semitic. Therefore, they always emphasize their great respect for the Jewish religion; their fight,

they say, is only against Zionism. They are very well aware of the fact that the word "Zionist" can be safely used as a euphemism for Jew. In Arab countries, as well as in Russia, anti-Zionist terminology is constantly used to spread the worst kind of anti-Semitic vilification against our people.

In the words of Israeli writer, Dan Leon: "There is ample evidence to show that the new anti-Zionism and the old anti-Semitism are brothers-in-arms, the object of both being not only Zionism and Israel but Jews in general."

You see, traditional anti-Semitism denied the Jew the right to be a person; the new anti-Semitism would deny the Jewish people the right to be a nation.

The U. N. vote said "Zionism is racism." What is "racism?" The definition in Webster's dictionary says: "it is usually coupled with a belief in the inherent superiority of a particular race and its right to dominate over others."

if Zionism is racism, then the Bible, revered by Jew, Christian, and Moslem, is also racist, it is, after all, the Bible which tells us of the eternal covenant created by God with our people, that we would inherit the land of CANAAN ERETZ YISRAEL.

In our Torah reading today, in Jacob's remarkable dream, God says to him:

Haaretz Asher Attah Shocheyv Aleha Lecha Etnennah Ulzarechah:

"The land upon which you are lying, I will give to you and to your children." As Professor Ben Halpern of Brandeis University pointed out:

"Zionism is no different from any other national liberation movement which claims for a particular

nation the right to sovereignty in its territory. If that's racism, then every nation on earth is racist." Take a look, if you will, at the nations who voted to condemn Israel as racist. China, a totalitarian regime, where millions have been killed in order to achieve Mao's idea of Utopia. Russia, which denies Jews and other dissenters their elemental rights as human beings. Iraq, which hangs people in the public square. Libya, which is ruled by a demented bigot. Uganda, whose racist murders have made the name of Idi Amin synonymous with human abomination and execration.

They have the chutzpah to call Israel racist! This is how Ambassador Chaim Herzog responded to that libel:

"You dare talk of racism when I can point with pride to the Arab ministers who have served in my Government, to the Arab deputy speaker of my Parliament, to Arab officers and men serving of their own volition in our defense border and police forces, frequently commanding Jewish troops, to the hundreds of thousands of Arabs from all over the Middle East crowding the cities of Israel every year, to the thousands of Arabs from all over the Middle East coming for medical treatment to Israel. To the peaceful co-existence which has developed. To the fact that Arabic is an official language in Israel on a par with Hebrew. To the fact that it is as natural for an Arab to serve in public office in Israel as it is incongruous to think of a Jew serving in any public office in an Arab country, indeed being admitted to many of them."
