Editor's Foreword
Micronesia, although located on the other side of the Pacific, is of particular interest to the United States. For, among its seven political entities, three are countries "freely associated" with the United States and two are U.S. territories. The remaining two are independent countries, a status that should become more widespread with time. For that reason, among many others, Micronesia should also interest other nations, including neighbors like Australia and a more distant Japan and those in the Pacific Basin in general. Such interest can take many forms, investment, trade, tourism, and so on. But it should certainly include the intriguing histories and cultures of the region as well as their political institutions and economic potential.
While there is some interest in Micronesia already, there should be much more over the coming years. The problem is thus, for those who want to know more, where to seek information about the region. Not enough has been written about Micronesia as a whole or its component parts, and what does exist is not always readily accessible or carefully organized. This HistoricalDictionaryofGuamandMicronesia therefore fills a big gap. It offers a look backward at the past, a look around at the present, and even the basis for a look into the future in an extensive chronology, a solid introduction, and numerous specific entries on persons, places, institutions, events, and so on. It concludes with a very comprehensive bibliography.
This volume was written by two men who know Micronesia thoroughly, having lived and taught there for many years. William L. Wuerch is manuscripts librarian at the University of Guam's Micronesian Area Research Center. In addition to several bibliographies, he has written many articles and monographs on Micronesian history. Dirk Anthony Ballendorf is professor of Micronesian studies at the University of Guam's Micronesian Area Research Center and was the center's director for five years. He,

too, has written extensively on Micronesia and edited GlimpsesMagazine. Their knowledge and experience combined to produce an extremely useful guide to a part of the world that deserves to be better known.

Introduction
Micronesia is a collection of island groups in the northwest Pacific Ocean comprised of five major clusters: the Marianas, Carolines, Marshalls, the Gilbert Islands, and Nauru. Their general location is from five degrees, twenty minutes north latitude, and from 130 to 180 degrees east longitude. Their total land and sea area is approximately the size of the United States, although the total land area would come to about one half of the state of Rhode Island or approximately the same size as the European Principality of Liechtenstein. If Micronesia were superimposed on a map of Europe and Asia, it would stretch from London to Tehran.
