Foreword
I Have Known Alexander Heard for many years, as Chancellor of Vanderbilt University, as Chairman of the Board of the Ford Foundation, and in connection with a number of educational boards on which we served together. I especially remember a fruitful meeting we had in Bogot, Colombia, in February of 1969. We were both attending a meeting on higher education in the American republics, but I was mostly concerned with an urgent message from President Richard Nixon that needed an immediate reply. Chancellor Heard generously set aside his schedule and worked with me for two hours in his hotel room drafting a response. I was most grateful for his help and ever after followed his career at Vanderbilt with growing interest and admiration.
During the years of student unrest, I spoke at his university and readily sensed the sustained analysis and skillful attention that he gave to the sources and issues of campus disturbances. Many of the selections in this volume reveal his remarkable rapport with faculty and students, which made it possible to maintain a free and civil platform for discussion at Vanderbilt throughout those difficult years. Also clear is his understanding of and effective attention to the myriad less dramatic demands that burden university chief executives.
