ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
An historian always has so many people to whom he is indebted. First, without the people who participated in the actual event, there is no history about which to write. We must always recognize their dedication and sacrifice. Second, the author must acknowledge all previous historians who have preceded him with their interpretations of the event. Any good writer researches these interpretations and builds upon this groundwork in developing his unique views and perceptions of the facts.
Nevertheless, while doing historical research, an author may come across an invaluable source. It seems trite to say that a book could not have been written without the assistance of another person. Nevertheless in this case it is true.
William Paul Burrier, Sr., of Leakey, Texas, knows more than any other living person about what happened before, during, and after the incident in August 1862 at the Nueces River. He is a thorough and tenacious researcher who has studied this matter for many years and has many source documents available. Furthermore, he is generous in sharing his knowledge with others, and enthusiastically and unselfishly does so.
While preparing this manuscript, Paul kept me straight on the facts; he encouraged me; he was my cheerleader! We talked on the phone for hours and he critiqued draft material. He helped me sort through the mass of data and recognize truth. I am indebted to him.
