PREFACE
In many respects, the present volume represents a sizeable departure from traditional works on Middle Eastern international relations. Most such works, be they edited collections or books by one or more authors, tend to offer partial explanations using only traditional methodological approaches. Furthermore, they tend to suffer from what might be called factor monism, i.e., the tendency to explain, describe, or predict international relations phenomena only in terms of one or a few variables (e.g., Islam, a charismatic leader, Arab nationalism, etc.) or one or more levels of analysis (societal, idiosyncratic, and so on).1
In the present instance, however, a conscious attempt was made to incorporate studies employing different methodological approaches on all political systems or subsystems affecting international relations in and with the Middle East. The overall result is a broad synthesis which helps both the student of the area and the interested layman see the "picture" whole, while alerting them of its complexity. Finally, it should be stressed that an impartial, academic approach has been emphasized in the selection of the studies presented herea much desired objective in an area which has produced so much passionate literature.
In part 1, the Middle East itself is considered alone as an entity, as a subordinate system of the international political system. The chapters in this section focus on the actors of the area and interactions within the subsystem itself, i.e., between single nations of the subsystem. They also examine the chain reaction to these interactions among the actors outside the Middle East subsystem.
