Preface

Program planning is integral to the practice of public health. As such, the intent of this text is to familiarize students preparing for careers in public health with the basics of this essential skill. It is an introduction to, not a compendium of, all that there is on the topic. With its three sections, Planning Foundations, Planning Basics, and Planning Frameworks, the depth and breadth of the content covered in Introduction to Public Health Program Planning is meant to provide students with a base from which to build their planning skills.
The first section, Planning Foundations, is comprised of , the generic stages of program planningassessing, planning, implementing, and evaluatingare introduced in preparation of their detailed discussions in the next section. Also covered in this chapter are the preparatory activities inherent in constituting a planning committee and convening a meeting, from developing an agenda to taking minutes.
The second section of the text, Planning Basics, includes , Evaluating, addresses program evaluation from the types of evaluation and evaluation designs to developing an evaluation plan and writing an evaluation report.
The third and final section of the text, Planning Frameworks, consists of .
Most chapters begin with an analogy to prompt student understanding of the content to be discussed. Each chapter ends with a Chapter Summary Sentence, a statement that encapsulates the essence of the chapter contents to substantiate student understanding of what was presented.
Also at the end of every chapter is a Planning in Practice Chapter Activity. These activities are based on peer-reviewed journal articles that demonstrate the application of the chapter content in a practice setting to enable students to see how the information is used in the real world. The activities in is not open access, but is easily accessed through the university/college library with the information provided.
It is my hope that this text will provide students with a solid foundation in program planning to start their careers in public health. It is also my hope that it will serve as a reference throughout their careers.

This book would not have happened had it not been for Mike Brown, my longtime (recently retired) editor at Jones & Bartlett Learning. It was his confidence in my ability to write the text and his guidance during the preliminary stages of the project that enabled it to come to fruition. I cannot thank him enough for this and for his wise counsel over the years.
A special thanks to Sophie Teague, my new editor, who took over from Mike without missing a beat, and Sara Bempkins, my content strategist, whose support from start to finish was invaluable. To the Jones & Bartlett Learning editorial and production staff goes a huge thank-you for all their helpMaria Leon Maimone, Praveen Babu, Dan Stone, and Faith Brosnan.
I also want to thank Hollie Gibbons, John Hudson, Christine Malone, Jamie Newman, and Tonya Roberson for making time in their busy schedules to serve as reviewers. Their suggestions were spot-on. I hope they see how much I valued their comments on the pages of this text.
