The Inclusive Mindset: How to Cultivate Diversity in Your Everyday Life: summary, description and annotation

If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Diversity and Inclusion doesnt have to be hard, complicated, and full of shame/guilt to be effective in our lives! What if we are inspired to focus on how to have meaningful progress instead of focusing on the things we are not doing well? In Justins decade-plus Human Resources work with clients from the Fortune 500 to fourth graders, he has learned that another approach to this critical conversation allows the reader not to be condemned but committed to real growth. This book is for Human Resources and the everyday person who wants to build real relationships with others (including those who are different).

Diversity and Inclusion is not just something you have to do, but rather who you chose to be! In this book, Justin takes a vulnerable approach to tackle tough topics in compassionate ways, all while inspiring deep reflection. If you want to learn, grow, and make meaningful change, this book is for you no matter where you are on the journey. Walk with Justin as he gets to the heart of the conversation with his relevant stories, practical examples, and helpful strategies to make diversity and inclusion a part of our everyday lives! To be clear, diversity and inclusion is not a hand-holding exercise where we will always agree. Rather, it is when we can disagree yet still respect each other. It is when we can vehemently disagree with others ideology and yet still passionately pursue their HUMANITY! Everyone is invited to this conversation.

Learn the practical strategies and suggestions (here are a few covered in the book):

  1. How to approach diversity and inclusion from a growth-minded perspective by understanding the difference between the Inclusive Mindset and the Exclusion Mindset.
  2. How to enlarge our Circles of Grace: Why we see people and events the way we do and what to do about it.
  3. How to respectfully disagree with others (even when we dont feel like it).
  4. How to listen deeply to others with courageous curiosity using the Power of 3 Method.
  5. How to use the 3x5 Beginner Allyship model to start learning about others and standing up for them strategically.

While there are many approaches to diversity and inclusion, Justin provides a conversational approach where he often shares his own mishaps and need for improvement (there are A LOT). Take this personal journey with Justin as he invites you to embrace The Inclusive Mindset.

Here are a few thoughts from everyday people who were beta readers:

Marcey Rader (Productivity Author and Coach): I am reading Justin Jones-Fosus book The Inclusive Mindset as a beta reader right now, and folks...you are in for a treat! Ive read four books in the last year to get me out of ignorant mode, and this, by far, is the best one to reach a wide audience of all flavors. I laughed out loud three times in the first 82 pages and have already recited three stories to my husband.

Linsey Chamberlain (Executive Specialist Administration): This book focuses on diversity and inclusion as an over-arching concept and doesnt just focus on one segment (race, gender, etc.) like most books tend to do. This book is easy to understand, has a good flow, and is easy to digest and retain. Ive read books in the past with good information and content. Still, as a reader, I would feel somewhat attacked (even if I agreed with the content, I would instinctually become defensive with the delivery). This book is full of grace and convictions, not condemnations. Justin said it best: Having privilege is not necessarily a bad thing. Its all about what you do with it.

THE INCLUSIVE MINDSET VISION
The World Can Be a Place Where...

People are treated with value, dignity, and respect no matter what they look like, how they identify, or what they believe.

People engage others every day with a sense of wonderment and curiosity.

People disagree respectfully while honoring the perspectives of others.

Everyone feels included, seen, and heard, and the voices of the marginalized are elevated and amplified.

People stand up for others when they see injustice occurring and challenge systems that dont work for others.

People dont have to be perfect and can receive grace as they learn from their mistakes.

Diversity and inclusion are no longer an initiative but part of our everyday lives, and no longer a mandate but simply a mindset.

This is the world we believe in. This is what we believe the world can be.

INTRODUCING THE INCLUSIVE MINDSET
Chapter 1
WHAT TYPE OF HUGGER ARE YOU?

Embracing the Right Approach

I grew up in a very hug-filled family I am a mamas boy and I constantly - photo 8

I grew up in a very hug-filled family. I am a mamas boy, and I constantly hugged my mother when I was a child. When I had a dog and a cat, I gave them endless hugs. I love hugging so much that my kids get at least 15.8 hugs a day from mewell, maybe only 14.7. Some hugs are when were both standing and other hugs occur when I lift them up, swing them around, and squeeze super tight. I love hugs so much I have even learned to hug myself (dont judge it until youve tried it).

HOW DO YOU HUG?

What type of hugger are you? I realize there are different types of hugs and greetings. There is the formal handshake greeting. There is the dap. And when you are really cool, your hands glide into an embrace. There is the hand hug (does anyone still do this one?). There is the classic side hug. There is the Im not going to let my body touch you hug. And there is thewait for itfull-frontal embrace hug. You know, the type of hug where you can feel the ribs of the other person. Some people call this a bear hug, but I call this a normal hug (well, for those I know who allow me to hug them this way). Which one are you?

Did you know that research has confirmed that hugs actually help reduce negative emotions during conflict? Hugs have been proven to improve mood and psychological well-being.

Now, I know some of you are reading this and saying, Justin, I dont want to hug you, or anyone else for that matter. You might be thinking, If I have to hug someone, then maybe I will not have an Inclusive Mindset . Dont put the book down quite yet. This book isnt about hugging (even though that would be a marvelously awesome book). But it is about embracing something, and that something is diversity and inclusion (which over time might lead to an increase in our mood too).

By diversity and inclusion I mean engaging those who are different from you. Diversity and inclusion have been misinterpreted by many over the years, but the terms simply mean seeing the humanity in others (yes, even those you disagree with) and treating them with value, decency, and respect.

Diversity and inclusion are important because every single one of us is impacted by how diversity and inclusion play out in our daily lives. In some ways we are all different. We all have unique qualities, and everyone deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued. Unfortunately, we live in a world where we can dehumanize others simply because they disagree with us or because they look different from us. Even with those I vehemently disagree with, I challenge myself (and it is hard at times) to see their humanity and treat them with respect because they are human beings. After all, wouldnt you want others to treat you and those you love with the same decency? I want my kids to grow up in a world that is more decent, respectful, and understanding than the one that currently exists. I want them to grow up in a world where they will be embraced and others can embrace them despite their differences. This book will help you and me do just that by helping all of us to develop an Inclusive Mindset.

An Inclusive Mindset is an echo of the vision I shared at the beginning of the book (go ahead and read it if you skipped it earlier). The Inclusive Mindset is when we approach the world with a sense of wonderment and curiosity. It is when we focus on how we progress and get better no matter where we are starting from. It is where we are less concerned if we get it all right and are more concerned about growing a deeper and more impactful understanding of the world and the human beings within it. The Inclusive Mindset is about noticing how diversity is present in our lives every single day if we acknowledge it and find ways to include more people and move toward having a more beautiful life. When we have this type of thinking, when we feel for others in this type of way, we know we are beginning to embrace diversity and inclusion not just at the head level but at the heart level, which leads to meaningful action and progress.
