Foreword
Borders and borderlands are prominent concepts and research topics in Area Studies. Area Studies traditionally are understood as multidisciplinary research efforts that focus on one particular geographic unit, which led to specializations of, for instance, Southeast Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, single nation-state studies, and many others. Borderland Studies fit in this tradition as they share a multidisciplinary approach to a confined geographical space. However, in the case of Borderland Studies, the confined geographical space is not one particular geographic unit, but rather a collective of areas, namely borderlands, that share similar features. Such close links between Area Studies and Borderland Studies is the reason why the three Area Studies research institutions within Kyoto University the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), the Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies (ASAFAS), and the Center for Integrated Area Studies (CIAS) have paid attention to borderlands.
The volume Transborder Governance of Forests, Rivers and Seas, of which two of the three editors are from Kyoto University Area Studies centres, contains a significant suggestion that Area Studies and Borderland Studies could play an important role in contemporary academia. While the topic of this book itself fits well within the research tradition of Area Studies, it also links with two important areas of current academic inquiry. Natural resource governance has become a prominent theme debated among academics, natural resource management specialists and development cooperation agencies, among others. Furthermore, the globalization phenomenon is not only increasingly linking the national capitals of countries that are located at opposite poles of the globe, but it also has led to an increased integration worldwide of economies and social networks of people who live in confined geographical spaces across national borders. Given these two trends, a volume that compiles divergent cases of natural resource governance across national borders, and that explores the implications of these cases for some of the contemporary academic debates, is a logical and timely contribution to the international literature.
