From the beginning, we have conceived of this book as a collaborative endeavour to bring together and integrate the emerging research on the role of international organizations (IOs) in environmental policy making and protection in the twentieth century. We organized a workshop at an intermediate stage in the project to discuss draft papers. Our exchanges at the workshop and beyond and the subsequent editing process have also allowed us to include cross-references throughout the book to highlight the interconnectedness of different roles of IOs from facilitating the formation of transnational networks (for example, of scientists) to setting agendas and institutionalizing environmental policy making at the regional and global levels.
We would like to thank Tanja Brzel and Thomas Risse from the Research College The Transformative Power of Europe at the Free University of Berlin for their intellectual and financial support for the workshop. We would also like to thank Andrew Waterman for his diligent final language check.
