Preface
This book started out as a short paper. Both of the authors deal with managers in various educational and consulting situations. Over the past year or two we found an increasing number of managers asking questions or making assertions about total quality management. There seemed to be a real need for a brief document that would, in a clear and straightforward manner, describe this concept, answer the most frequently asked questions, and correct the most common misconceptions. So, we started to write an article about that. Before we knew it, our brief article had grown beyond the bounds of a ten- or twenty-page handout. We refocused our efforts on a short monograph. But, again, the monograph got out of hand; we found ourselves with a manuscript that was definitely book-length.
